First Trip Around The Sun Birthday Ideas: Cake & Food

In an attempt to save a little money, I decided to go ahead and make Ms cake and cupcakes for his first trip around the sun birthday party. This is very unlike me, because I am really NOT a baker. However, they ended up turning out great, and making the cupcakes made me discover that I actually like baking. I started baking some other tasty stuff after this and now I have a new hobby that I have no time for!

Full disclosure: the cake definitely ended up leaning a bit, so it was far from perfect. But for my first cake, not horrible! I used 3 4-inch round cake pans and made the cake 3 layers .

To make the cake and the cupcakes, I just doctored up some cake mix! I started with funfetti cake mix. I added one extra egg than the directions call for . Instead of oil, I used melted butter and I used twice the amount .

I used Satin Ice Buttercream Icing Mix to make the icing. I iced the cupcakes using an icing bag and a star icing tip. Then, I added some gold sprinkles!

The cupcakes were absolutely DELICIOUS! Everyone loved them and they were slightly shocked to hear I had made them!

The cake topper is from Etsy and the number 1 candle is from Dollar Tree. I got the edible stars on Etsy as well!

What a glorious day, the day you were born, my sweet baby boy. If you have followed along then, you know full and well that this child has been a constant source of joy and my own little sunshine throughout this past year. I couldnt have imagined the last twelve months I cant believe this was how we spent our very first year together. But more than anything else, I cant imagine life without you, and I am so grateful for the gift of celebrating one big trip around the sun!

This intimate celebration is my favorite theme, yet. I love to throw parties, the wedding planner in me looks forward to every single birthday in our family. I knew from the beginning this would be our little Rolfs birthday theme. I am totally in love with these images, the colors, the overall feeling that day was just so sweet.

Having a child with a birthday right after Christmas is a little challenging because I had to be on top of my game when it came to throwing this soiree. I have had so many requests for links to items like his little party crown, the balloons, my dress,which was just restocked, the sunshine prints, and more. I am sharing them all here for you!

Lessons From A Half Of Lifetime Worth Of Birthdays

In early March, I turned 46 . As I reflect on the adventures of the past year, Ive decided to share my thoughts on what birthdays mean to me, as well as some tips for making them meaningful for you and your family.

I used to hate birthdays. To this day, Im not entirely sure why. I guess I always felt like a birthday should be something more than what it was. My parents were never that into celebrating birthdays I remember many years when I would just bake a cake with my mom and otherwise have an ordinary day.

One of my most memorable birthdays was one when my mom wasn’t there. She had been traveling for work, so my dad took us out to go practice shooting BB guns. I baked my own cake, which my sister helped me decorate. I was around nine or ten. For some reason, that day stood out to me because we did something really different that we otherwise wouldn’t have done.

Normally, because we werent that into presents, my birthday was a day I would spend wishing something would happen that never did. Then my dad passed away about ten years ago, just after my birthday. That was when I realized that birthdays are never a given. Each trip around the sun is something precious and important. None of us is ever guaranteed another birthday, which is why each of them should be remembered. Birthdays are a recognition of life, a reminder of all that we have learned and experienced, and thats something worth celebrating.

My decor was minimal, and eye catching decor piece was the balloon garland.

I purchased my balloon garland from Etsy. It comes with 255 balloons, and the colors are beautiful, bold, and neutral!

The balloon garland was a beautfiul backdrop for photos and for the birthday boys cake smash. For party favors, I ordered these from Etsy and wrapped them around a king-size Hershey bar.

His birthday crownmight have been my favorite thing, I wish he could wear it every day.

Birthday boys first time eating sugar and he really enjoyed it! Cant say I blame him.

For the dessert table, I found galaxy-themed lollipops from Amazon that were a huge hit! They really made the dessert table come together, and I put them in this acrylic lollipop stand.

Usually, for our parties, I like to make one big drink in my pitcher, and I happened to find a Galaxy Lemonade for kids. Very easy to make and everyone loved it. Lots of our guests spiked theirs with vodka and it was delicious! I know the recipe calls for sugar and honey, but I opted that out. I made the Butterfly Pea Tea in the morning, let it cool, and right before the party dumped one big jug of Minute Maid Lemonade with some ice. Very easy and tasty, and the blue/purple color was striking! Definitely would make this again.

    Its been almost two months since we threw Ms first trip around the sun first birthday party at our house and Im only just now getting around to posting about it!! With his birthday being in November, it has kind of become an extension of the chaotic holiday season for us .

    I was planning this party for a while before it was actually time to throw it, and the amount of times I searched first trip around the sun birthday ideas is slightly absurd. Im such a perfectionist, so obviously this was no exception!

    We had been deciding between a Where the Wild Things Are Wild One birthday theme and the First Trip Around the Sun birthday theme, but Im glad we ultimately went with first trip around the sun! It ended up being so cute and fun.

    Instead of buying themed decorations, I decided to just purchase a printable set of decorations on Etsy . A lot of printer ink and cardstock paper was used, but it was the best decision for me to do the printable stuff because I was able to personalize so much of it.

    Trip Around the Sun Birthday Card

    Like I mentioned before, we bought a bundle of printable decorations on Etsy for Ms First Trip Around the Sun birthday. Everything in the bundle was editable, which was awesome!

    We designed the poster using the printable decorations bundle we got, then we had it printed at Staples. The balloon boxes are from Amazon. You have to do a little assembling for the boxes, but its overall pretty easy!

    I bought this balloon arch on Etsy and assembled the whole thing myself. It was quite an experience! Blowing up the balloons was the hardest part, and Im glad I got an electric balloon inflater for that part. Putting the actual arch together was fun for me, but I might just be a weirdo!

    The number 1 balloon is from Amazon and so is the spaceman balloon.

    The high chair banner is from the printable decorations bundle we got. Then I just tied some streamers onto the sides in the theme colors.

    The cute little first trip around the sun birthday crown is also from Etsy! My son hated wearing it, so it didnt get much use, but its definitely super adorable and well made!!

    I used Ms monthly photos to create this milestone banner and then I hung it on our fireplace mantel in the living room. The design for the banner was part of the Etsy bundle we got, so I just went in and added the photos on my computer, then printed out the finished banner. Super easy!

    My Baby Bear Turned One

    Deciding on a theme was challenging. I kept going back and forth. A few themes that I loved were a simple boho animal theme or a Bob Dylan/Rock theme. New Darlings posted on their blog for their sons 2nd birthday the most adorable Bruce Springsteen theme that I instantly fell in love with. After a very intense search of birthday boy themes, I finally settled on a First Trip Around the Sun theme.

    Even though the theme was First Trip Around the Sun, I did not want it centered around rockets and astronauts. I was going for minimal boho decor. Originally the colors I choose were pale oranges and yellows but after showing my husband my inspiration board he said it resembled a Thanksgiving party, and I could not unsee it after that.

    Baby boys birthday did not have many outside vendors for activities. He was the only child at his birthday so I didnt see the need to have activities. We ordered pizza for dinner hung out with friends and family, and had a great time.
