Send Invitations To Everyone

Once you have decided on all the important aspects of the birthday party and know how many kids you can afford to invite over, it is time to send invitations. Of course, you can print out some invitations and let your kids give them to their friends at school. However, you are at risk that the invitations will get lost.

Instead, try sending a digital invitation to their parents. Greenvelopes blog can offer you more advice on how to send an e-vite and more e-vite tips. This way, the invites will find their way, and parents can easily confirm the kids attendance.

Kids Birthday Party Schedule

The key to a successful childs birthday party is to have a schedule or run sheet of how the celebration will go.

This will help you stay on track, avoid any potential boring moments and make sure you get through all the activities you have planned before the guests parents arrive to take them home.

Kids birthday parties are typically between 2 and 3 hours long, increasing in length for older kids who require a little less supervision and activities to entertain themselves.

A rough guide for how to schedule a kids birthday party may look something like this:

  • Welcome guests and get everyone settled
  • Play the first game or commence entertainment
  • Play another game or do an activity
  • Free time for kids to play
  • Another game or activity if time permits
  • Opening presents
  • Hand out party favours and say goodbye to guests

It is important to remember that when it comes to children, things often dont go exactly as planned and they also can take a little longer than you might have anticipated so having a little room for movement can help.

You can always have an extra game or two in mind in case you run through everything too quickly and have time to spare, but you will often find that kids will enjoy simply playing together during those unplanned moments.

Find The Best Party Time For Your Family

My birthday parties are always in the late afternoon. Usually, start time is either 3:30 or 4:00. My kids nap from 1-3ish so that later time means they will be well-rested and in a good mood . It also is a convenient time for most of my family and friends who also have children that nap.

I have only ever thrown a day party and have not yet done one at night. A couple times we have had schedule conflicts and have needed to do a morning party and it works out fine too I aim for around 10 or 10:30 for a morning party because most people will have already eaten breakfast and not yet be expecting lunch so it helps cut down on party food as well as my grocery list ð

Another perk of having an afternoon party is it means I have ALL morning to get my house clean, prepare food, etc. Also having it at that time slot means guests dont expect a full meal so it lowers my party costs on food!

Set A Birthday Party Budget

Kids birthday parties do not need to be expensive! In fact- most of the home parties we’ve thrown over the years have cost less than $100. Here are some tips to streamline the cost:

  • Run the games, activities, and crafts yourself vs. hiring out the entertainment
  • Plan your party in the afternoon and offer snacks and birthday cake vs. a meal
  • Have the party craft also serve as the party favor
  • Don’t spend money on pricey themed paper goods and decorations! Buy solid-colored paper goods that are cheaper, and allow you to use leftover pieces at future parties! Decorate with inexpensive balloons or steamers

What About Sleepover Parties

Right around when the kids start turning 8, the subject of sleepover parties starts to come up. And there are LOTS of things to consider when it comes both to hosting a sleepover party, as well as sending your child to one.

A few things to think about when it comes to hosting a sleepover party:

  • Not everyone will want to sleepover . So have a plan to include kids for the evening activities, who won’t be staying over, and set a pickup time for after your games are done.
  • Kids don’t get a lot of sleep at slumber parties. Which means as a host, you won’t either!
  • You’ll have to decide where the kids will set up their sleeping bags

I cover tips and advice for sleepover parties in greater depth in my ebook How to Throw an Awesome Kids Birthday Party at Home for Less Than $100This is an affiliate link: MomOf6 earns a commission if you purchase, at no additional cost to you.!

These kids party entertainment ideas tend to be on the more expensive side, but can be a lifesaver when hosting a large group of kids!

Or have a craft project or make and take for the kids to do. Some fun party activities we have done are having a paint party with mini canvases for the kids to decorate and a tie-dye party, with each child taking home their own tie-dyed shirt.

But it can be as simple as decorating a party hat or having a colouring-in station for them to enjoy too.

Birthday Cakes For Kids

As for birthday cake, you can either make one yourself, order from a bakery or cake decorator or buy a pre-made cake from the supermarket.

If you have time, making your own birthday cake is a great way to save money but if youre short on time or not confident in your baking skills, theres no shame in buying a cake.

I often do a little of both, converting a simple store cake into a more extravagant cake by adding extra decorations.

Check out this guide for cake serving sizes if you are unsure of what size cake to get for your birthday party celebration.

You can make your own cake topper in the theme of your party, or check out Etsy for lots of affordable custom cake toppers as well.

Theme Ideas For Kids Birthday Party

How to Plan a Party! Party Planning Checklist!

Once youve picked the location for your kids birthday party it is time to pick a theme. The theme can be tied to the location of the party or something your child is really in to. For instance, we had our daughters party at an escape room. So naturally the theme was puzzles and mystery. My son is enthusiastic about Blaze and The Monster Machines and the movie Cars, come October Ill probably choose either of those. The key to picking a theme is to make sure that it is easy to get decorations and party favors to go with it. For babies and toddlers popular theme ideas are Elmo, Mickey Mouse, princesses, wild animals/jungle, and anything that comes on Nick Jr. or Disney Jr. Older kids can help you decide their theme. A few popular ones Ive seen with school-aged kids are gaming, sports, super hero, outer space, spa and unicorn.

The Most Important Ingredient: Kids Party Food

Food is an important factor for any party, but when it comes to kids birthday parties, its only second to the gift receiving! Once youve got your guest list and RSVPs, you can start thinking about how much food youll need.

While your child and their party guests wont say no to fairy floss or jelly beans, its the hosts who will dread that inevitable sugar crash. At LENZO, we acknowledge that kids party food should be fun, so theres no need to ban all sugar and carbs. However, its still possible to make your childs birthday food healthy without compromising on the level of enjoyment.

Heres a few ideas on what healthy kids party food to serve:

B Ditch The Crockery And Cutlery

Now, this is one of the best tips I can share with you from my years of kids party planning and hosting.

Forget about cutlery, serving platters and plates.

Use clever solutions like these paper snack cones for food instead.

Ive used them for my daughters birthday parties.

They hold just enough for a little treat and can be disposed of easily afterwards.

They come in packs of 40 with their own cardboard trays.

Fill them with popcorn make it yourself for a SUPER CHEAP snack or crisps or mini sweet bites.

Invitations For A Kids Birthday Party

Once you have the guest list finalised, its time to prepare and send out the invitations. If you are wanting to save some money on invitations, there are a few ways you can do this:

For kids birthday parties, aim to send out invitations around 2 to 3 weeks before the party.

Make sure to include the following on your party invitations:

  • Address including venue name if not at home
  • RSVP date and your contact information
  • Any extra details they need to know or items they need to bring i.e. messy play clothes, swimmers and towel etc
  • Optional: You may also like to request if any guests have food allergies so you can cater to these needs.

If hosting a party for younger children, you may also consider specifying whether a parent needs to stay with the child or if they are free to pick them up later
