Alternatives For Healthy Birthday Cake Bars Recipe

I made this healthy, sugar free and gluten free and low calorie birthday cake bar recipe with this particular ingredient list, but heres some options to choose from.

  • Oat Flour: Almond flour
  • Unflavored protein powder: Unflavored Collagen, or even Almond flour or Oat flour
  • Sugar free Maple Syrup: Regular maple syrup or Honey, but they wont be Vegan or a no sugar recipe anymore.
  • Coconut flour: Try using about 3 Tbsp of Almond Flour

Options for the Protein Icing:

  • Greek Yogurt: Coconut Yogurt
  • Butter: Non dairy butter

Easy Ways To Add More Protein:

  • Use whole milk as your milk, this will give you some extra grams right there!
  • Add some egg white powder. Some protein bars add this to increase the protein levels easily. It can also be very easily digestible. These birthday cake protein bars will not be vegan if added of course. If you add a scoop, you may need to increase the almond butter by one or two tablespoons and add an extra splash of milk.
  • Use a protein drink in place of the milk. Have a favorite protein milk drink? Opt for that instead!

Now THIS is how Id like to celebrate my 8th blogiversary!

Yes, ehem, Ive been doing this whole blog thing for EIGHT SOLID YEARS. My jaw has dropped. My mind is blown. I really dont know how to wrap my head around this concept sometimes? What started out as a hobby slowly grew and grew, that by year four I was like, Wow, this has the potential to be my full-time gig! And by year six, I was able to quit my day job and officially become self-employed. And for that, I am so incredibly grateful to each and every one of you.

Without you, this recipe post wouldnt be here.

Without you, this entire blog wouldnt be here!

Before I get to the recipe, I wanted to say that these last eight years have been one helluva rollercoaster. So many ups, so many downs. There are times when the track is bumpy, and I swear there have been moments where it feels like the cart Im in gets stuck upside down in a loop high off the ground, and the only thing keeping me together is a flimsy seatbelt.

To be honest, Ive been struggling with blogging lately. And by lately I mean well over a year. I guess its a combination of things:

  • hormone changes
  • stress about work
  • stress about money
  • anxiety and depression

After almost a full semester of baking , I started this blog. I didnt know it at the time, but 4/20/2011 was a very special day

But ANYWAYS. ON TO THE GOOD STUFF! AKA THESE BIRTHDAY CAKE PROTEIN BARS!

How To Make Protein Bars

Muscle Milk® Birthday Cake Flavored Protein Bars 12

First, add the birthday cake protein powder, cashew butter, almond flour, maple syrup, vanilla extract, almond extract, and salt to a bowl. Mix together until dough forms.

Next, line a square baking dish with parchment paper. This will prevent the dough from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Also, it will help you remove the bars to slice them later on. Dont skip it!

Then, add the white chocolate chips to a bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between, until the white chocolate is completely melted. After, pour it over the dough and spread in an even layer across the dish.

Lastly, chill in the freezer for 5 minutes or just until the white chocolate sets. Depending on your preferred size, gently slice them into 8-12 bars. Enjoy!

Birthday Cake Protein Bars

Birthday cake protein bars are nut butter and vanilla protein bars packed with funfetti spinkles. Made with only 7 ingredients, these no-bake protein bars are quick and easy to make. They are healthier than a slice of birthday cake, but taste just as delicious! These birthday cake protein bars are chewy, thick, and taste incredible.

My love for the birthday cake flavor is strong. In an effort to create a dessert with more nutrients but with the same delicious flavors, I did some experimenting. It wasnt long before I came up with my new favorite easy, delicious treat: birthday cake protein bars.

Note: The idea for this recipe came from seeing the popularity of my Monster Cookie Protein Bars and Cookies and Cream Protein Bars!

Can I Make Substitutions To This Recipe

I havent tested many of the ingredient swaps, but I would bet you can make the necessary changes based on your dietary needs and available ingredients.

  • Oats I use old-fashioned oats for this recipe, but you can use gluten-free or any kind of oats that match your dietary needs.
  • Cashew butter Cashew butter is a really important ingredient to the FLAVOR of this recipe. However, any kind of creamy nut butter would work to get the correct consistency. Just beware if you use another ingredient it wont taste exactly like cookies and cream.
  • Vanilla Protein Powder The vanilla protein powder helps provide some extra vanilla flavor, so I would recommend using that or even a birthday cake flavor protein powder if you happen to have one!
  • Cake Batter Extract and Sprinkles These two ingredients are going to help create the birthday cake flavor were looking for, so I would recommend keeping them!

Recipe Tips And Notes:

  • The biggest impact on the flavor of these bars will be your protein powder. If your protein powder tastes like grass, then these protein bars are going to taste like grass. Sad, but true. I would opt for a vanilla versus a flavorless, unless you use a collagen peptide powder. Collagen seems to be the only powder that is really and truly flavorless. I could get behind using one of these for sure.
  • A thinner, drippy almond or cashew butter will work best. It will be easiest to mix up these protein bars if you use a nut butter that is moist, smooth and more on the runny side. I usually keep mine out of the fridge for about an hour to help loosen it up a bit.
  • When I say press, I mean PRESS these babies into the pan. If you want a really sturdy, dense bar, then you gotta put all your weight into it, sit on it, whatever you have to do, bring the power. The bars will be too flimsy if you dont so when you think you have pressed hard enough, keep going.
  • Feel free to roll these into bite sized balls instead of bars. Simple, poppable protein bites are great as well!
  • Sprinkles often include food dyes. If you are looking to avoid food dyes, opt for sprinkles that are naturally dyed. There are actually a lot of them out there these days!

What You Will Need:

Birthday Cake Protein Bar – XS Energy & Sports Nutrition
  • almondflour: I use a combination of oat and almond flours. Almond flour is sometimes not fine enough and it is also very pricey. But I love the flavor of almond flour so had to include it. I have made it with all of one or the other and the recipe using just oat flour was a bit too dry.
  • oatflour: you can actually make your own oat flour if you would like!
  • nut butter: I have made these birthday cake bars with almond butter and cashew butter. I love them both and cannot decide. Almond butter is easier to find and sometimes less pricey, so that may be a better bet if you are looking to save cash. This homemade cashew butter is one of my favorites as well!
  • vanilla protein powder: please choose one that you love or these will not be too tasty
  • maple: my preferred sweetener. Use a different liquid sweetener if you swap it.
  • vanilla extract: this will give you more birthday cake flavor in these protein bars. There are birthday cake and cake batter extracts out there, but I am not a fan. Feel free to try for yourself!
  • milk: use a dairy free or regular. This just helps moisten up the bars.
  • sprinkles: use your favorite!

Ingredients In Homemade Protein Bars

For the full ingredient measurements and step-by-step instructions, scroll down to view the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

  • Birthday cake protein powder: There are so many brands to choose from, so feel free to use your favorite! If you cant find a cake batter protein powder, plain vanilla protein will work just as well.
  • Cashew butter: This is the best nut butter to use when youre making a sweet treat, like cake or cookie dough. It has a milder and sweeter flavor than peanut butter.
  • Almond flour: Otherwise known as ground almonds, this is a wholesome alternative to all-purpose flour. I recommend using a superfine variety, like Bobs Red Mill Superfine Almond Flour.
  • Maple syrup: Maple syrup naturally sweetens these healthy protein bars.
  • White chocolate: Use your favorite brand of white chocolate chips. If youre vegan, make sure you choose a dairy-free variety.
  • Sprinkles: Rainbow sprinkles make these homemade protein bars so much fun! You can even take it a step further and use holiday-themed sprinkles around Halloween, Christmas, or Valentines Day.
  • Vanilla extract: Pure vanilla extract helps bring about that classic cake batter taste we are aiming for.
  • Almond extract: Surprisingly, this extract tastes nothing like almonds. It has a strong, sweet flavor and only a quarter teaspoon is needed.
  • Salt: Add a pinch to balance the other rich flavors.

Tips For Protein Powder Birthday Cake Bars

These protein powder birthday cake bars with all the sprinkles and funfetti are really easy to make, but heres some tips to get it right.

  • Use whey-caesin protein powder since it works well with the ratio of ingredients here. If you use a whey protein powder, you might want to adjust the amount of milk to make it less.
  • Mix the dough well to form a smooth mixture, but dont over-mix since the protein powder might make the texture tough.
  • Let the healthy birthday cake bar layers chill before adding the chocolate and slicing, or they will be too soft.

Tips For The Best Homemade Protein Bars

  • Use a vanilla protein powder that you love the taste of. I’ve never tried birthday cake protein powder, but know they make one. I imagine it would be amazing in these birthday cake flavored bars!
  • Press the bars firmly into the bottom of the pan. I use a spatula, but the flat bottom of a measuring cup would also work well.
  • If you prefer protein bites, cut the bars into bite size pieces. You can also roll the dough into protein balls, use 1-2 tablespoons of dough per ball. They can also be cut into larger bars.
  • If you don’t mind adding sugar, a light drizzle of white chocolate on the tops of these bars is amazing! Melt about an ounce of white chocolate and drizzle it over the dough before chilling it. To keep the bars with low sugar, Lily’s Original White Chocolate Style Bars are my favorite. .
