Your Social Security Card is Insecure

But todays questions concern date-of-birth issues that are not necessarily so routine.

Q: I always thought I was born on Jan. 1, 1955. And thats what my birth certificate shows. But I was just told a very interesting story by a very old aunt my mothers sister. She told me that I was actually born on the night of Dec. 31, 1954 just a few minutes before midnight. She said that the hospital administrators in the small town in Nebraska where I was born, in secret collusion with my mother, fudged the hour and date of birth on my birth certificate in order to make it appear that I was born in the first couple minutes of Jan. 1, 1955. I thus became the first baby of the new year in our town. Apparently, the hospital got some much-needed publicity for their newly established birthing clinic, and my parents got several prizes from local merchants. My aunt told me that my mother was so embarrassed by her actions that she never told anyone except her sister this story. My mom took this secret to her grave! What are the Social Security ramifications of this?

A: Wow! What a fascinating story. And thats all it is at least for now just a story. Your official birth certificate shows you were born on Jan. 1, 1955, and that is what SSA is going to use as your date of birth in its records.

Social Security Prepares To Send Out $2573 Payments In July

In the United States, the date of your automatic Social Security paymentreceipt depends on your birthday, so you may soon receive your monthly check. To find out if this is the case, you simply need to check the exact day of the month with your date of birth. It all depends on the day of the month you were born. The Social Security Administration makes benefit check payments on Wednesdays of each month, so you may soon receive your benefit if you were born on these exact days.

July 20 is the day when many people will automatically receive a payment of up to $1,657 from Social Security. This automatic payment can also be by check, although this option will take a little longer to arrive at your home address. You can check below to see whether or not you will collect your automatic benefit payment in the next few days.

The Area Number From June 25 2011 To The Present

On June 25, 2011, Social Security changed the numerical assignment process to one of randomization for the purpose of protecting the integrity of the SSN and freeing up more numbers, thus extending the longevity of the nine-digit format. As such, all cards issued after that date have an Area Number that does not actually correspond to any location at all.

Gender Change Or Correction

For a gender change, SSA will need to see any one of the following

  • Full-validity, 10-year U.S. passport showing the new gender
  • State-issued amended birth certificate showing the new gender
  • Court order directing legal recognition of change of gender or
  • Medical certification of appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition in the form of an original letter from a licensed physician.

The document must have enough biographical data to clearly identify you. As always, all documents provided must be original or certified copy.

If gender is an error and needs to be corrected, an original or certified copy of the birth certificate would be acceptable.

    Social Security Death Index

The Social Security Death Index is a database of death records. It was created by the Social Security Administration from the agency’s Death Master File Extract. It includes the names of the persons with SSNs whose deaths were reported to the SSA from 1936 through the present. However, in 2014, a law was passed that imposed a three-year-post-death delay on releasing death information. The index provides information on the deceased person, including date of birth and date of death.

You can access the SSDI online at Ancestry.com, if you become a member. Free online access is available at GeneologyBank.com or FamilySearch.com. Simply fill out the name and any information you have, including the SSN. In this way, if someone is deceased, you can use the SSDI to find a birthday with a Social Security number.

Items similar to Social Security Check

You may have to pay taxes on your Social Security benefit, depending on your income level. If your retirement income is over a certain amount, then part of your Social Security benefits may be taxable.

Single-filers with an income between $25,000 and $34,000 will have to pay income tax on up to 50% of their benefits. If they make more than $34,000, then up to 85% of the benefits may be taxable.

Keep this in mind when filing your tax return. You may also be able to withhold your taxes from your Social Security benefits payments, so you arent stuck with a large tax bill on Tax Day. Check your SSA account online or visit your local Social Security office for more information.
