I Tried Every Glossier Balm Dotcom
As someone with lips and skin more generally, that can get really dry and dehydrated, Ive been a fan of the Glossier Balm Dotcom for a while now. But I realised that I hadnt dedicated a full blog post or review to all things Balm Dotcom yet.
And now that Ive tried every Glossier Balm Dotcom that they currently have available, thanks to some seriously unreal Black Friday/Cyber Weekend deals. I thought that now was as good a time as any. I also wanted to share which one or ones are must-buys for me. As well as which ones I would probably pass on purchasing again.
Each Balm Dotcom on its own is usually £10 each or you can buy 3 for £25. Which is a pretty good deal ordinarily. So you can imagine how excited I was to get a set of three for £18.75 on Black Friday. I may, or may not have, bought two sets of three, I was that determined to take advantage of the deal. In 2014, we fell in love with Glossier, and weve been falling harder and harder with each new product it launches. From the cult-classic balm dotcom and the super serums to the innovative sunscreen that debuted last month, the brand has so many winners, were losing count. Its latest one, though, is by far my favorite. Every girl is going to want oneor three. Oh, and did we mention its called Birthday Balm Dotcom? Instant gift.

What makes this launch so special, aside from the fun, glittery packaging, is that its a collaboration with New Yorks famous bakery , Milk Bar. If you havent tasted its Birthday Cake Truffles , in my opinion, you havent fully lived.
Of course were fans of the other Balm Dotcom flavors cherry, rose, mint and coconutbut this one takes the cake, literally. Its got the addicting funfetti flavor you love and a holographic shimmer infused into its clear formula that looks SO pretty on lips. Trust me, you will want to apply, and reapply, all day long.

While we dont have too many details just yet, like a launch date or the price point, it looks like Glossier plans on dropping it soon. At least thats the impression we get from their Instagram teasers.
Were crossing our fingers the birthday edition is in the same price range as the rest of the Balm DotCom shades, which are $12 each.
And for a product that has shimmery, holographic packaging, you bet your bottom dollar that the lip balm gives off subtle hints of glitter.

It is no exaggeration to say I’ve had a tube of Glossier’s Balm Dotcom in my left pocket every day for six years. This product has reached the same level of importance as my phone, wallet, and keys. It’s that good. However, even though I love the flavors, it’s easy to go blind to them throughout the day. That is until someone points them out.

Now, BDC has gone through some changes since I fell in love with Glossier. Back then, the boldest flavor was birthday, which I felt so cool whipping out and using during my 100+ person freshman lecture class . Nowadays, theres a balm for every type of person.
From the sweet to the floral to the absolutely empty void that is original , here is my ranking of all the Balm Dotcom flavorsordered from least to most favoritewhich is arguably the only BDC ranking that should matter.
The Glossier Birthday Balm Dotcom Is Now Available Online For $12
The Birthday Balm Dotcom was inspired by the famous dessert of Milk Bars most popular product, the Birthday Cake. If youve never had it before, trust us when we say that its an explosion of joy, nostalgia, and tasty goodness in your mouth. If there was a cult product version of a cake, it would be Milk Bars Birthday Cake.
Doesnt that look like the ultimate treat? Were actually drooling.
As with all of Glossiers Balm Dotcoms, the ingredients used to make it are safe and free of harmful ingredients.
The Birthday Balm is made with castor seed oil for max moisture, beeswax that serves as a protective barrier, lanolin to heal sensitive skin, deeply moisturizing cupuacu fruit extract, rice bran and rosemary leaf extracts full of antioxidants to combat free-radical damage.

So, what’s in Glossier Balm Dotcom? You may have heard it described as “glorified Vaseline“which isn’t exactly true!
To evaluate a product, I always look at the first five on the ingredient list. These typically comprise the majority of the formula.
All the Balm Dotcoms have the first five to six ingredients in common:
- Petrolatum: Petrolatum, also known as petroleum jelly, is an occlusive ingredient. It doesn’t actually heal chapping, but it can be helpful because it forms a protective barrier to keep moisture locked in. While I prefer natural ingredients, and wouldn’t recommend it all over your face or body, I don’t see too much harm as a lip balm. Just avoid licking your lips and be sure to wipe it off before you eat, so you don’t ingest it!
- Castor seed oil: Castor seed oil is a stable oil with water-binding properties. It’s also very thick and emollient. However, it can be allergenic for some people.
- Beeswax: Beeswax has emollient, occlusive and humectant propertieswhich means it both nourishes and protects the skin. It, too, can be allergenic .
- Lanolin: Lanolin is a natural wax from the wool of sheep. I consider it the MOST effective ingredient for healing chapped lips! Glossier doesn’t say whether they are using medical-grade .
- Dipalmithoyl hydroxyproline: Dipalmithoyl hydroxyproline is a plant-derived amino acid derivative with skin-conditioning benefits.
- Vitamin E
Glossier Lip Balms: The Price
$12 a tube is a little spendy, but its all relative.
For comparison sake, Rosebud Salve is $6 / 0.8 oz and Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb is $18 / 0.3 oz , while Burts Bees balms are around $3 / 0.15 oz at pharmacies everywhere.
However if you cant resist the Glossier Balm Dot Com Trio like me, you do save six bucks, making them $10 each a little more reasonable.

Glossier Lip Balms: The Bottom Line
Turns out, I came around on them.
Once I got over my misperception of what the Glossier Balms were all about, I actually started to like them. A lot. They feel nice and natural, without any slickness or goopiness.
Now in my experience, they dont deliver on the promise of an ultra dewy sheen.
What they do deliver on are claims of soothing, mosturizing, conditioning, smells great. So if those sounds like things you want in a lip product, you may have found your love match.
When considering whether I should recommend any beauty product, my one-and-only most important factor is, do I reach for it again? In other words, do I think about it when its out of sight? Do I drop it into my bag when Im heading out? Do I grab it instead of a comparable product?
Turns out the answer to all these questions is yes.
I actually find myself reaching for them when I need a little lip moisturizing, or just a dab of non-glossy gloss over a matte lipstick. But the real benefit and point-of-difference are definitely the nicely formulated scents.
Which means slowly and a little reluctantlywow. Ive really come to like the Glossier Balms. Just not in the way I was expecting.

Cookie Butter Balm Dotcom
I had been on a handful of dates with Elliot. We had dinner at this hole-in-the-wall French restaurant in the East Village one night. This was followed by some stolen kisses in the falling snow on the way to a burlesque show. By the time we were seated, my lips were dry.
As I returned from the restroom, I slathered on a bit of the newest Balm Dotcom flavor, Cookie Butter. I was excited about Cookie Butter when it launched because it was the type of flavor I liked: sweet and spicy. It was great, but not what I was expecting.
When I got back to my seat, Elliot planted one on me before the next act started.
“Did you put on chapstick in the bathroom?” he asked through a hazy grin.
“Something like that,” I replied.
“You taste like gingerbread. I like it,” Elliot said.
I never really decided if I liked the scent . But because I now attach it to him, I have a soft spot for it. The scent and the guy are new to me, and I’m still trying to figure both of them out.
