How To Play Happy Birthday On Piano For Beginners

Happy Birthday Piano Easy Version

EASY Happy Birthday Chords (Beginner Piano Lessons: 24)

I have kept the notes of the easy piano version as simple as possible. The key signature is in F major . This is a good key to learn to play Happy Birthday in because the melody will be at a pitch range that most people can sing. The choice of key is a really important thing to consider when learning to play any piece that people are going to sing along with you dont want to spend a long time learning a piece to find that it is far too high for anyone to be able to sing!!

The time signature is 3/4 so there are 3 quarter note beats in every bar. However, there is an upbeat as the melody starts on the last beat of the bar.

The right hand notes follow the melody line. The right hand can remain in its starting position for all of the 1st line. It is only when you get to the first note of the second line birth that you need to stretch to place your 5th finger on the top C note.

The left hand Happy Birthday notes in this arrangement are also very simple. You can keep your left hand in its starting position for the whole piece. Make sure you watch out for the B flat in Bar 6. There is a pause symbol on the second beat of bar 6. When performing the song remember to pause at this point to build up for a big finale this will certainly encourage people to sing loudly!

Happy Birthday Easy Piano Music

May 21, 2021 By Sara Mullett

Here are two Happy Birthday easy piano music arrangements for young pianists. The first one is for children who have only just started to play, with just the simple melody line centered on middle C so theyll find it really quick to master. And the second is an easy piano music arrangement for both hands together which is more suitable for someone whos been playing a little longer.

If youre new to teaching piano to kids, do take a look at my First Piano Lessons eBook which is filled with teaching tips, tricks and games for teaching young children the piano in an engaging way.

When kids first start learning any instrument, the challenge is to get them hooked. And while of course its very important to make sure that they learn the correct theory and technique, its also really important to make sure that they are having fun and enjoying the experience of playing pieces that they want to play both for themselves and for others.

So Happy Birthday is a great choice, as its one of the first and most important songs a child will learn, it has such a special significance and is of course one that that they will come to sing many times every year. So naturally it makes a great piece for young pianists to play. They always love being able to play it for their friends at birthday parties and it goes down so well with Granny too!

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Any beginner will love playing this childrens classic on the piano. One of the great things about this song is that almost every note is played twice in a row, meaning there are fewer notes for your child to locate.

Add Jazz Chords Using The 2

The next step is to make your chord progression more interesting by adding chords to the arrangement. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to add the 2-5-1 chord progression throughout the arrangement. Here is a basic 2-5-1 in the key of C Major:

As you can see, we can target a C Major chord by adding a D minor 7 , and then a G7 . The 2-5-1 is one of the most common chord progressions in jazz, so it will automatically make the arrangement sound more jazzy.

What is a secondary Dominant chord? A secondary dominant chord is a chord that can be added in front of any chord, and it is the dominant 7 chord built on the note a perfect 5th above the target chord. For example, if we go back to our 2-5-1 chord progression, there is a chord we can add before the 2 chord, the D Minor 7 chord. If we follow our secondary dominant rule above and we play a dominant 7 chord built a perfect 5th above the D Minor 7, then this is an A7 chord. Therefore, here is how we could use a secondary dominant chord before the 2-5-1 chord progression:

Now, with these two concepts , here is our new chord progression:

As you can see, measures 2-4 is a big long 2-5-1 in the key of F . The Ab13 on beat 3 is a dominant 7 chord with an added 13. Why does this chord work? It is a substitute chord for the secondary dominant chord D7, which leads us to Gm13. Specifically, it is a tritone away from D7, and we call this a Tritone Substitute chord.

Assign Each Chord A Number

If you want to learn how to transpose, it helps to learn the number system.

Each chord gets a number. Our starting key is C Major, so recall that the C Major scale goes like this:

C-D-E-F-G-A-B

Since our C chord is built on the first note of the C Major scale , it gets the number 1 or I.

The chord is built on the fifth note of the C Major scale, so it gets the number 5 or V.

Our F chord is built on the fourth note of the C Major scale, so its name is IV.

Dm is built on the second note of the C Major scale, so it becomes our ii chord.

So, in number form, our lead sheet now looks like this:

Getting The Basics Down

Some parents are hesitant to teach their children basic music skills because they dont know where to begin. The good news is that you dont need to be a professional player to teach your child easy keyboard songs like the ones below. In fact, you dont need any musical experience to get started you can even learn alongside your child!

First off, youll need to learn the location of the notes on the piano. Start by finding C its the white key directly to the left of the group of two black keys. Using only the white keys, the notes continue in alphabetical order up to G, and then they restart at A.

You can label the notes C, D, E, F, G, A, and B with stickers to make it easier for your child. Most easy piano song notes will all fall on the white keys, so theres no need to worry about labeling sharps and flats just yet. Once youve found where these seven notes are, you and your kids can start learning basic piano songs!

Difficulty: The Dissociation Of The Two Hands

The greatest difficulty when you start learning piano is to play both hands at the same time. This is called hand dissociation.

This work is not easy because it requires our brain to disassociate to play two different melodies at the same time.

This is why we have made you play first the right hand and then the left hand. This is the technique most used by beginners to learn the song step by step.

This part will inevitably take time because it is a matter of work. Our brain being used to symmetry, dissociation is not something its used to process. You will therefore have to be patient and work rigorously. But dont worry, it comes quickly! There are a number of techniques that will allow you to dissociate your hands faster.

Did you know that Happy Birthday is the song that is sung most often, world wide! It covers a range of 8 notes or an octave. To play it on the piano place 2 markers either side of your end notes. This will make it easier to find your position.

The white keys on the piano are named after the first 7 letters of the alphabet A B C D E F G.

Our song starts on G. To find G, find a group of 3 black keys in the middle of the piano. G is the white key between the 1st and 2nd black key. Place a marker on the note to the left of G. This is F. Now find the G, 8 notes higher. Place a marker on the note to the right of G. This is A.

Because you will be playing both the high and low G, the low G will be written as a capital G the high G will be written in lower case g.

Here are the notes for Happy Birthday, played on the white keys, between G and g.

G G A G C BG G A G D CG G g E C B AF F E C D C

You could play the song with just one finger, but it is better to use one finger per note. Piano fingering is the way the fingers are numbered. The thumb is 1, the index finger is 2 and so on. Place both thumbs on Middle C. The song starts with the 4th finger of your left hand on G. Enjoy playing the worlds most popular song.
