Jesus Birthday In The Bible

The Birth Of Jesus The Messiah

Happy Birthday Jesus | Official åç«MV (å®æ´ç) | å童詩æ | Mayå§?å§?

Matthew 1:18-25This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, , was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. Joseph, son of David, the angel said, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

All of this occurred to fulfill the Lords message through his prophet: Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means God is with us.

When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

Luke 2:1-14In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to his own town to register.

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

Not Observing A December Holiday Is Okay Too

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

You might be of the persuasion that says I know Jesus wasnt born in December so I cant celebrate His birth in December. Its an intellectual hurdle I cant jump over. FINE! No problem! Dont let anyone criticize you for it. You be fully persuaded to enjoy December any way you like. Ill do the same. Thats the LIBERTY that we have in Jesus. Embrace it!

The point Paul is making in Romans 14 is not which days you should or shouldnt observe, its that you should give God the glory regardless of whether the day in question is special or ordinary to you

He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it

Every day is a day God made. Every day is special in that sense. If you want to go beyond that, and pluck out a day to make personally special thats your freedom in Christ. If you dont, thats your freedom too.

To God be the glory, and amen.

~ Matthew

When Did Christians Date The Birth Of Jesus At Christmas

In fact, many early Christian fathers objected to the celebration of Christmas at all. The date of Christmas was not determined until what we nowadays call the year 221 A.D. by Sextus Julius Africanus . Using the Bible as one of his principle authorities, Sextus wrote a prodigious 5-volume chronology of sacred and secular time running from the worlds creation, which he placed in 5499 B.C., and up to the date of his books publication in 221. In it, he concluded that Jesus was born on December 25th. Many contemporary theologians responded, in effect, so what? Its pagans who celebrate the birth of their heroes. We dont. Christians are concerned not about the births of our saints and especially not about Jesus birth. Were concerned about their deaths. While everyone is born, not everyone is martyredand no one haseverbeen martyred as the incarnate God was martyred. His martyrdom brought Resurrection and Ascension! It revealed the whole of Gods redemptive planit revealed the empyrean and provided for the salvation of all of believing humankind.

Evidence In The Bible

Bible scholars work from what Scripture tells us regarding the history of Jesus. The events took place within the living memory of the writers or their families, such as the reign of Herod during which time Matthew tells us Christ was born.

We know there was a celestial event that alerted the Magi, and this can also be dated. John the Baptists preaching took place during the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius . Jesus approximate age at the start of His ministry is also supplied in the book of Luke, so we can determine that Christ was likely born around 2 or 3 BC.

“In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.”

Jesus Christ Birthday In The Bible

For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mothers womb and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.

Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.

Every December 25, Christians worldwide come together to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Christians and historians who have looked into the dates and times and records believe that this is not the date of Jesus’ birth. It is a replacement or alternative celebration to another pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice. People celebrated the winter solstice with a feast called Saturnalia, where it was common to give gifts and decorate homes.

So, when was Jesus born? There is a great debate around the topic of the date of Christ’s birth. Between calendars changing, questionable record-keeping, and lost records, it’s hard to get pinpoint specific dates. Some have used Scripture to follow the stars, and others have used historical records combined with Biblical accounts and cultural traditions to narrow it down. The most widely accepted month is September , and the year is most commonly estimated to be around 3 B.C.

The calendar can complicate the calculations because B.C. counts backward, and A.D. leans forwards. Still, there’s no year zero, which can throw off calculations.

When Was Jesus Really Born

The Christmas narrative has become linked with the date of December 25, which is a historical fact. The concept that Christmas is His birthday is everywhere, whether youre listening to songs or looking at images of the nativity scene. However, what has become public belief is not entirely accurate in terms of historical fact. The Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke are the only two versions of Jesus birth in the New Testament, and both gospels present the tale from a somewhat different perspective than one another.

In contrast to Luke, who begins in Nazareth, Matthew concentrates primarily on events in Bethlehem.Due to the fact that neither is especially specific in terms of a calendar date, identifying Jesus birthdate is a difficult endeavor. The writers of the gospels rarely include details on when events took place or what time of year they occurred. The Bible does not indicate a specific day or month when Jesus was born, says the author.

While the date of December 25 has been widely accepted as the day of Christmas, this was not the case because Jesus was born on that day.The Bible makes it clear that this is an implausible date for Christs birth, and this is supported by historical evidence.Although it is not impossible, it is doubtful that Jesus was indeed born on December 25, as some have speculated. Here are a few of the most important reasons.

Why Is The Age Of Christ When He Started His Ministry Important

It’s important because that’s what was recorded in the Bible. In Numbers 4:3, it says that a priest must be 30 years old to hold the senior office of priest.

It is also commonly taught in the Code of Jewish Law that leaders should be at least 30 before they take their post. And Luke 3:23 states that Jesus was about 30 years old.

Additionally, Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding of Cana where Jesus turned the water into wine at his mother’s insistence, Jesus hesitated to tell her that “it was not yet time.”

Traditionally, Jewish weddings are held in Spring-Summer because they don’t conflict with any major holidays, plus flowers would be in bloom. Most agree Jesus’ birth month is in September. Perhaps the reason for his hesitation being due to timing was the timing. Maybe Jesus was 29 at that point. There isn’t hard evidence backing that claim, but it does stand to reason, given the other data we have been collecting.

Why Do We Celebrate The Birth Of Jesus At Christmas

Jesus Raises Jairus’ Daughter | Stories of the Bible

The Nativity sets under the Christmas tree is a symbol of the Christmas story: Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus surrounded by shepherds, travellers and animals in the stable. A scene from around 2000 years ago, which is still the reason for celebrating Christmas today. But why do we celebrate the feast every year in December, if it is not really Jesus’ birthday?

Scientists still disagree, but most of them assume that the feast was introduced in Rome on 25 December in the fourth century under the Emperor Constantine.

A list of pagan holidays in the Roman calendar indicates that this date was very special among the pagans of that time. On this day the Romans celebrated the birthday of the Roman sun god Sol Invictus, the winter solstice and the ‘rebirth of the sun’. They lit solstice fires and performed festivals in the circus. The Roman Saturnals also fell at this time in December: a Roman peasant festival in honour of the god Saturn. Researchers suspect that this date was therefore chosen as the feast of the birth of Christ. The custom probably spread to what is now Western Europe in the 7th and 8th centuries.

The Birth Of Jesus Christ

This is a summary of the Biblical account of the birth of Jesus. You can read more in-depth Bible verses from the Scripture below and use the articles and videos to understand the meaning of this world-changing event in the Bible. Almost 2,000 years ago, a young woman from the town of Nazareth named Mary was visited by an angel named Gabriel. Gabriel told the Jewish woman that she would have a son named Jesus, who would be God’s Son. At this time, Mary was engaged to her soon-to-be husband, Joseph. When told, Joseph was hurt and confused because he did not believe Mary. The angel Gabriel visited Joseph and told him, “do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit,” and her son, Jesus, would save the people from their sins.

During this time, an angel appeared to shepherds who were watching their flocks in the fields near Bethlehem. The angel told them the good news of the birth of the Savior and Messiah, Jesus Christ. The shepherds immediately went to find baby Jesus, which the angels told them they would find sleeping in the manger.

Jesus Wasn’t Born In ‘year 1’

Before we even get to the month and day debate, historians generally agree that we’ve got the year of Jesus’ birth all wrong. How can that be, though, if “year 1” on the Gregorian calendar was based on the year that Jesus was born?

The short answer is that the man who invented the idea of anno Domini for “Year of Our Lord” was off by several years. Even Pope Benedict XVI agreed in a 2012 book that Dionysius Exiguus, the sixth-century monk who first calculated the year of Jesus’ birth, miscounted, and that Jesus was likely born anywhere between 7 B.C. and 2 B.C.

One compelling reason for an earlier birth year is that the Bible mentions in several places that Jesus was born when Herod the Great was king of Judea. But Herod the Great supposedly died in 4 B.C.E., according to Flavius Josephus, the famed Roman-Jewish historian who lived in the first century C.E. If we take Josephus’s word for it, then Jesus must have been born at least four years earlier than our calendar says.

What Is Known About The Birth Of Jesus According To The Bible

So there is little valid information about the actual date of Jesus’ birth. What emerges from the two biblical traditions of Luke and Matthew is:

  • Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Judea.
  • Herod the Great was king in Israel at the time of Jesus’ birth. But he actually died already in 4 BC and not in the year 0, so the period from 7 to 4 BC can be considered as the time of Jesus’ birth.
  • Jesus’ parents were called Mary and Joseph, who were engaged at the time of his birth.
  • According to the Bible, the birth of Jesus was a virgin birth by the action of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible And Jesus’ Birth

Dissecting the Bible, we can begin to find answers to the time Jesus was born.

Apostles Matthew and Luke both give clues that suggest Jesus was born around 4 BC. Both have cited circumstances during this time which helps us narrow down a timeline.

One of the most telling clues is the mention of His birth being during the time of Herod the Great. Specifically, Matthew 2:1 states: “Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king.”

At this time, Herod was the king of Judea, while Caesar Augustus was the ruler of the Roman Empire.

Theologians also came to believe the birth of Jesus Christ falls along this timeline of Herod by working backward from when He was 30.

In Luke 3:23, we learn His age: âAnd Jesus himself, when he began , was about 30 years of age.â However, Biblical scholars don’t necessarily agree this information can conclusively determine the day of His birth.

Confusion In Historical Calendars

Several factors are involved in establishing the year of Christs birth. There were two dating systems at the time of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. One was his new Julian calendar and the other calendar began with the year Rome was established: 753 BC. To complicate matters, Julius Caesar also determined that a year would be calculated beginning with the accession of absolute power by the then emperor, according to BibleStudyTools.com.

About 500 years later, a mathematically-minded monkDionysius Exiguus invented the concept of AD, BibleStudyTools.com stated. His purpose was to establish when Easter should be celebrated by working backward using a complicated system of his own. He decided that Christ was born in AD 1, and his system was adopted in Europe around 200 years later.
