Kids birthday parties do not need to be expensive! In fact- most of the home parties we’ve thrown over the years have cost less than $100. Here are some tips to streamline the cost:
- Run the games, activities, and crafts yourself vs. hiring out the entertainment
- Plan your party in the afternoon and offer snacks and birthday cake vs. a meal
- Have the party craft also serve as the party favor
- Don’t spend money on pricey themed paper goods and decorations! Buy solid-colored paper goods that are cheaper, and allow you to use leftover pieces at future parties! Decorate with inexpensive balloons or steamers

Local Leisure Centre Party
As children get older and can swim, a trip to the local leisure centre makes a great party. Swimming pools often have inflatables that the kids can use and a cafe onsite for food after they have finished swimming.
My daughter also attended a friends party where they had hired the gym instructor to give the kids a fun zumba lesson. Or check out the local climbing wall and see if the kids can all go for a lesson.
Tumbling Into Six Years Old
You probably know this already, but your little ones gymnastics studio will also usually host birthday parties. Even their friends who dont take or enjoy gymnastics will have a blast tumbling around on the mats, trying to balance on the beam and diving into the foam pit. Spring Easter Egg Hunt Party
If your child’s birthday is in the springtime and close to Easter, hosting an Easter Egg Hunt might be the perfect idea for a memorable celebration. In addition to the egg hunt, you can plan other fun crafts and activities, such as setting up an egg decorating station for extra fun. As far as party decorations go, consider streamers, balloons, Easter baskets, and eggs, all in pastel colors. Bonus? They double as photo ops. During spring season, supermarkets are filled to be brim with Easter inspired treats, so keep the menu stress-free with store bought treats and drinks you can pick up at your local stores to minimize food preparation.
Art & Craft Themed Party
If you have a 6-year-old who loves to be creative by painting or creating new items, then an art and craft themed party would be perfect for you to inspire your young artists, and it allows them to have fun with a variety of art-related activities. With this type of party, do note on the invitation so that the guests can dress accordingly.
For decorations, you can use bright and colorful handmade banners, paint splash signs, balloons that you dress up yourself, vibrant garlands, a splatter-painted table runner, and food signs in the form of art stationery.
Food Ideas:
For the food and treats, it would be a great idea to have finger foods, snacks, and simple beverages as your guest will be so busy being creative. You can also have cupcakes and cookies with colorful sprinkles on or paint splashes made with bright, colorful icing and a rainbow birthday cake.
Games and Activities Ideas:
Give each child their own colorful apron based on their favorite color as they arrive at the party. You can set up a couple of different stations for finger painting, clay modeling, poster painting, and just a couple of kids at each station at a time and then let them rotate after about 15 minutes. You will need to have an adult at each station to help.
Another idea is that you can have each child decorate their own cupcake or cookies or play a game of dart balloon painting where each child gets a turn or two to burst a balloon with a dart filled with paint on a big white sheet of paper.

Here’s something my sister did for her little girl: She had a “luau”. She got the idea when she saw a mess of Hawaiian trinkets and such on a web site. You would probably have to Google it. Anyway, they had little grass skirts, and theme games like limbo, pin the coconut on the palm tree, etc. and of course appropriate finger foods. The cake was a sheet cake made to look like waves rolling onto shore and Teddy Graham swimmers and surfers. By the way, they live on the east coast!

We had a princess party for my granddaughter’s 6th b/d all children came in princess or prince costumes we had fake jewels and silver and gold paper and trims and all made crowns. We played pin the wand on the princess paper prince or princess hand on wall and paper wands. For grab bags we used gold candy coins.

Preparing The Guest List
You may want to invite the entire class, but inviting everybody makes managing the party difficult. Also many kids wont be friends with the birthday boy or girl, so they will feel bored. Prepare the guest list by inviting only the kids that your young one is friendly with. Also, invite all the neighbourhood friends of the kid, as he will be the most comfortable with them. Parents can also invite close family friends and relatives. These people will help the parents to manage all the kids and help in the arrangements.
Local Hall / Sports Ground Party
Both my children share their parties with school friends who have birthdays around the same time. Between us, we have rented the local hall. They will often have sports equipment available for use, and bibs/vests which are helpful if playing team games.
You could host a sports-themed party, with soccer or other ball games, running games yourself or hire an entertainer/ask a local coach to help.
We have played games like stuck in the mud and 40/40, Simon Says etc. The older daughter and her friend set up a nail bar and treated everyone to a nail makeover.
We have hired the hall several times and have cooked on site and ordered from a local take-away for these parties. Both worked equally well.
All the children seem to really enjoy this format as they get to run around and have fun together.
