“The Twelfth of Never” was written and performed by Johnny Mathis. It was released for the first time in 1957. Cliff Richard also recorded the record. The most popular and well-known version was, of course, recorded and sung by Donny Osmond in 1973.

This is my favorite of all Donny Osmond’s records. The first time I heard it, I fell in love with the song. After all these years, it still brings a tear to my eye to remember those days when I fell in love for the first time.

Donny Osmond Reflects On His Career

Sometimes, in the middle of a conversation, Donny Osmond bursts into song. Not like in a showy way. Its pretty casual actually. He seems to sing without even thinking about it. Hes recounting a story about a time in Chicago, when he was performing Puppy Love as it was climbing the charts and he goes right into the opening line: And they called it puppy looooove Later hes telling me about something that happened when he was touring as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in Minneapolis and a second later hes singing Close every door to me and then carrying on with the story.

And his singing voice is well, its heavenly.

Hes been in the music business for almost as long as he can remember. He has literally one memory from before he was a professional entertainer. He was about 3 years old and he remembers playing in a sandbox. It was him and Marie, and a friend named Scott hes since lost touch with. I cant believe I remember that name! he says. He remembers playing with trucks and a shovel next to his baby sister and his friend.

It was my haven, he says. And I left it at 3 years old.

His four older brothers were already singing in a barbershop-style quartet when Donny joined them. He was 5 the first time he sang on The Andy Williams Show. Five. Think about a 5-year-old you know. Now think about that 5-year-old traveling, singing professionally.

My dad was so mad at me, he says, a little embarrassed.

Osmond was born on December 9, 1957 in Ogden, Utah and was the seventh son born to George Osmond and Olive Davis. A natural performer, Osmond began singing at a very young age alongside his older brothers as part of the musical group The Osmonds. His talent made him a standout performer and he quickly took on many of the groups lead vocals. In the 1970s, Osmond decided to branch out as a solo artist and released several hit songs, including Puppy Love and Go Away Little Girl.

In 1976, Osmond set his sights on television and partnered with his sister to host the hit variety show Donny & Marie. Many years later, they co-hosted a short lived daytime talk show from 1998 to 2000. Although the show only ran for two seasons, the siblings scored back-to-back Daytime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Talk Show Host. In 2008, they teamed up again for a limited six-week engagement in Las Vegas. The shows were so successful that their residency was ultimately extended to a 11-year run.

Donny Osmonds Clean Lifestyle And Staying Young

Can we talk, for a moment, about the way Donny Osmond looks? Hes 63, but he doesnt look 63. He just seems youthful. No, his face isnt as smooth as it was when he was 15, but whose is? Donny could pass for someone a decade younger. Some of that is from surgical adjustments, hes acknowledged, but he also lives a healthy life. Hes mostly vegan. I get the impression he was exercising not long before I arrived this morning. And as a devout Latter-day Saint, he doesnt drink or do drugs.

I ask him if hes ever had alcohol in his life.

Not on purpose, he says.

There was a time, when he was a teenager, touring at the height of his fame, and during one moment in the show he was supposed to come offstage and take a few gulps of water. One night one of the stagehands thought it would be funny to replace the water with vodka which Donny realized just as he was swallowing.

I thought I was going to die, he says. Then, after a beat, he jokes: Best show I ever did in my life.

When his dad found out, the stagehand was fired.

Thats abusive to a teenager, Donny says.

Donny’s Career Since Then

So, what has Donny been doing since performing all of these famous songs? Well, for many years, Donny and his sister Marie have been performing together as a duo. He also starred as Joseph in the famous film adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, where he sung lead on the song “Coat of Many Colours.” And, to top off an already incredible career, he won Dancing with the Stars back in 2009.

He has also been known to host a few game shows in his time, such as Pyramid and The Great American Dream Vote. Along with radio shows and musical theater, Donny is as successful today as he was back then as a teen. One of the reasons that Donny is still in the public eye is because he has learned to adapt and change. His music is different, more mellow, and he has embraced work in films and TV. On top of that, he is still as handsome as ever. Maybe not in that boyish cute kind of way, but in a warm way, having that beautiful and friendly smile.

Donny still has millions of fans all over the world . I may be an adult now, with many years on the clock, but I still remember that first flush of love when I looked across the room at the TV and thought, “Wow who is that boy?” It was that moment of heart-melting romance that lead me to met and marry a dark haired man.

Donny Osmond Takes On Vegas Solo

The residency at the Flamingo with his sister was a staple in Las Vegas, one of the most popular and profitable shows in the citys illustrious history. They started in 2008 for what was supposed to be a few weeks and went on for 11 years. Over that span, they sold north of 9 million tickets and performed more than 1,700 times. Then, for reasons that have never been made public, they decided to end it. Their last show was in November 2019.

This time its just his face on that giant marquee, just his name printed on those expensive tickets. Hell be the one deciding which songs to sing and when, what to say to the fawning or fidgeting audience. And that audience will be there for Donny and Donny alone. Sure, hell have producers and designers and backup dancers and an entire live band there on stage with him, but the success of the show will rest entirely upon the shoulders of Donny.

Planning all of this has given the 63-year-old Donny a chance to think back on his 58 years in the entertainment business. Hes met so many people, created so much music hes recorded more than 600 songs and experienced a series of total reinventions. Working on the new show has made him a little introspective, almost philosophical. More than anything, its making him think about his own identity.

I ask him if this new show in Las Vegas is a new chance to tell his audience who he is.

No, he says quickly, smiling again. This is a chance for me to tell me who I am.

Being born in December near Christmas was always like having back to back awesome days. This year was even better after I opened my card from Donny Osmond.

The card was actually sent by Ruth & Kevin at Trackside Auto Body.

It took me back to the days when Donny & Marie had their own TV show. I’ve talked to a lot of folks who have seen their show at the Flamingo in Las Vegas. 900,000 people attended their show over their 11-year residency.

If you want to have Donny sing to someone, go to the American Greetings website. Donny apparently sang dozens of names, so there’s a good chance that the name you want is on there.

You also get to pick which age he sings. Pick from the individual number , 20 something, 29 and holding, 40-50-60-70-80 something, who knows how old, and the one I received, “You’re super duper old.” Funny.

You can also get cards sung by Michael Bolton or Smokey Robinson. William Shatner will shout a card for you.

So, if you see Donny, please thank him for me. And tell him that Mark Wilson thought his brothers’ country album with “I Think About Your Loving All The Time” was really good.

How Donny Osmond Balances Family Children And Fame

For what its worth, Donny also seems happy. He seems content. Hes been married to his wife, Debbie, for more than 40 years. They have five sons and 12 grandchildren, all but two of whom are boys. All but one of his kids live in Utah, and his house is the general meetup point. For years, while he and Marie were performing at the Flamingo, Donny commuted back and forth from Provo. Hed fly to Las Vegas on Tuesday, then fly back Friday night so he could be with the family on Saturday mornings. Think soccer games, birthday parties, that sort of thing. Then hed fly back for the Saturday night show, then back to Utah again for church Sunday morning. The next Tuesday, he would start it all over again.

When he was on The Masked Singer, hed fly back and forth from Los Angeles to Las Vegas every day, sometimes arriving at the theater with just minutes or less to spare.

He plans to do something similar for the new show.

When hes not working on the new show, or his forthcoming studio album his 63rd album overall he spends most of his time behind his house, in his garden. He tells me he built a waterfall and a fire pit and planted one fruit tree for each of his grandkids. Hes even starting a vineyard.

A vineyard? I ask.

Yeah, Im not doing a Donny Bordeaux or whatever, he says. I just love grapes.

In fact, he says, he has some great grape juice in the kitchen if Id like to try some.

A lot of people werent as lucky as I was, he says.
