Healthy Individually Packaged Snacks For Kids

These individually wrapped snacks are great for school, preschool, or daycare because theyre easy to pack and store. I did try to keep the list somewhat healthy and saved the sweeter treats for the next category of birthday treats.

  • GoGo SqueeZ Applesauce Nut, dairy, and gluten-free
  • Thats It Bars Free of the top 12 allergens and made of only fruit.
  • String Cheese If your school has access to a refrigerator for snacks, cheese sticks can be perfect because they provide protein and fat whereas many store-bought snacks do not.
  • Babybel Cheese I love this 3 ingredient cheese option.
  • Bitsys Brainfood Crackers These nut-free crackers are a great option. They come in a variety of flavors and are one of my favorite crackers for toddlers.
  • Stoneyfield Organic Yogurt Pouches and Tubes Easy to find and only 4 g of sugar, these are my favorite pre-sweetened yogurt for kids.
  • Mama Chia Pouches With 4 g added sugar I do recommend saving these for kids 2 and older.
  • Dino Bars These are a softer texture than other popular bars like Larabars, which is perfect for younger toddlers. I send these with my daughter when I need a store-bought snack for preschool and she loves them.
  • Raisins Easy to find and loved by most kids, raisin boxes are a great last-minute individually wrapped snack for kids.
  • RX Kids Similar to Larabars but featuring egg whites for extra protein, these are another great individually packaged snack for kids to take to school.
  • How To Choose The Best Healthy Snacks For Kids Step

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when buying healthy store bought snacks for kids

  • Look for a minimal amount of added sugars. Many labels now have this separated out and lower is better. For a snack like a bar, I aim for no more than 5-8 grams simply because more than that often tastes incredibly sweet. There are so many great options out there that rely on fruit for sweetness.
  • Look at the first three ingredients. If theyre things like whole grains, fruit, vegetables, nuts, or another source of protein, that is a great sign.
  • Choose whole grain products when possible. These will be more filling with their higher fiber content, which may help keep the kids more satisfied until their next eating opportunity.
  • Look for reduced sodium options, especially with foods that arent specifically for kids such as Triscuits. Its okay to have some sodium and you dont need to count, but if you have the option, choose the reduced-sodium optionthey usually taste similar.
  • Look at the serving size so youre sure that youre understanding the context of the nutrition label. And remember that portion sizes are not one size fits all and hunger and appetite are your best guides for how much food the kids need.
  • Look at the protein and fat content, which will give staying power to the snack so it helps keeps kids fuller longer.
  • TIP: Theres not really a perfect snack for kids, so do your best with the options you have!

    How To Make Sure Store

If youre unsure whether your childs favorite snacks are free of allergens, you can check the nutrition label on the back of the packaging or box. Ingredients are listed by quantity contained from highest to lowest. For more information on what to look for, visit our resource on how to read food labels.

Be mindful not to buy anything thats made with nuts or processed in a plant where nuts are present. Youll want to look for warnings like:

    • May contain peanut or tree nuts
    • Processed on shared equipment with peanuts or tree nuts
    • Manufactured in a plant with peanut or tree nuts
    • Contains peanut or tree nut ingredients

If youre still not sure whether a snack is safe, look at the FAQ page on the products website or choose another option. Its always better to be safe than sorry where nut allergies are involved.

Things To Remember About Nut Free Birthday Treats

Make sure that even with nut free snacks youre still talking to your students teacher or to the parents of the food allergic child when deciding what to bring in as a shareable nut free birthday treat. Make sure if theres any confusion, that you ask questions before assuming a particular snack is okay to pass around the class. There might be other allergen sensitivities that you need to keep in mind. We love our nut free product recommendations. But, do be sure to be your own biggest advocate by staying up to date with current labeling and facility policies. Recipes change over time. Always check labels.

Even when something is clearly labeled nut free, we want to encourage you to run your potentially shareable food by the parent of a food allergic child. There might be another allergy youre currently unaware of in addition to their allergy to nuts. And, I guarantee the parents will really appreciate it. If its a new nut free snack theyve never even heard of, it could be super fun to introduce them into a new rotation of their shopping list!

Tips For Choosing School Birthday Snacks

    Snack & Birthdays

Choosing school birthday snacks isnt as simple as it once was. Many schools have policies these days to ensure safety around food and contact in the classroom.

Some schools have eliminated birthday snacks entirely, or at least limited the options.

Single-serve birthday treats are the most common option and while cupcakes have long been a popular choice, there are plenty of other options instead.

Firstly, know your schools policy around birthday food before you bring something in. The last thing you want is a disappointed child when they cant share their treats with their class friends.

Always find out how many kids are in the class and if there are any dietary restrictions you need to consider. For this reason, it always helps to touch base with your childs teacher before the birthday just to make sure.

If possible, the best option is a treat that each child in the class can enjoy, so if there is a child who has gluten or dairy allergies, aim for an alternative they can enjoy too so that child doesnt need to miss out or feel left out by having a different treat.

Nut-free birthday snacks are also recommended to eliminate issues with anyone with medical condtions around nut allergies.

Alright lets plan some simple birthday treats!

    • Veggie Straws are definitely no health food, but its REALLY fun for my kids to get to eat a normal snack that some of their friends are eating now and then. Plus, theyre pretty easy to find and keep on hand.
    • Hippeas Snacks. These are like Pirates Booty , but their flavors are also vegan which means theyre safe for dairy-free folks! The vegan white cheddar is our favorite, but weve liked most of the ones weve tried!

Does It Make The Healthy School Snacks List

Pin by Amanda Falk on MY craftiness

The best way to determine if foods are allergy-free snacks is to read the label since most brands have a warning statement or allergen list. Be aware of phrases like this:

May Contain Peanut or Tree Nuts

Processed on shared equipment with Peanuts or Tree Nuts

Manufactured in a plant with Peanut or Tree Nuts

Contains Peanut or Tree Nut Ingredients

You may even notice that some brands get very specific and list the type of tree nut. For example:May Contain Almonds.
