The Origins Of The Song

The origins of the song Happy Birthday to you remain unclear. The story goes that, in 1893, Patty, a kindergarten teacher from Kentucky, asked her sister Mildred to compose something that the kids could easily remember. The sisters had created the melody of the song under the name Good Morning to all. What happened between then and the first publication of the song with the melody and the text in 1912 is debatable, particularly because no credit was mentioned at that time. The rest is history- and a lot of copyright lawsuits.

One of the most famous versions of the song has been interpreted by Marylin Monroe and her sexy Happy Birthday, mister president for the 45th birthday of John Kennedy. If you are looking for a more wife-friendly version, you now have special platforms that allow you to receive birthday wishes sung or declared by celebrities for a fee. How cool is that?

The song is at the center of every birthday celebration, with its lyrics being translated into dozens of languages! But whether you sing Feliz aniversário, Fijne verjaardag or Zorionak zuri, the ritual remains the same: somebody turns off the lights, you are being presented a birthday cake with lighted candles and everybody sings until you blow the candles while making a happy wish. Ah, the memories…

Happy Birthday Piano Easy Version

I have kept the notes of the easy piano version as simple as possible. The key signature is in F major . This is a good key to learn to play Happy Birthday in because the melody will be at a pitch range that most people can sing. The choice of key is a really important thing to consider when learning to play any piece that people are going to sing along with you dont want to spend a long time learning a piece to find that it is far too high for anyone to be able to sing!!

The time signature is 3/4 so there are 3 quarter note beats in every bar. However, there is an upbeat as the melody starts on the last beat of the bar.

The right hand notes follow the melody line. The right hand can remain in its starting position for all of the 1st line. It is only when you get to the first note of the second line birth that you need to stretch to place your 5th finger on the top C note.

The left hand Happy Birthday notes in this arrangement are also very simple. You can keep your left hand in its starting position for the whole piece. Make sure you watch out for the B flat in Bar 6. There is a pause symbol on the second beat of bar 6. When performing the song remember to pause at this point to build up for a big finale this will certainly encourage people to sing loudly!

Encountering Black Notes In The Easy Arrangements

The version in G may be easier for your students to play, because with the key of F version, each hand has to deal with a Bb note. In the key of G version, only the right hand has a black note.

However, the G arrangement uses several bass clef ledger line notes! You will have to decide. I think the G version is easier.

Difficulty: The Dissociation Of The Two Hands

The greatest difficulty when you start learning piano is to play both hands at the same time. This is called hand dissociation.

This work is not easy because it requires our brain to disassociate to play two different melodies at the same time.

This is why we have made you play first the right hand and then the left hand. This is the technique most used by beginners to learn the song step by step.

This part will inevitably take time because it is a matter of work. Our brain being used to symmetry, dissociation is not something its used to process. You will therefore have to be patient and work rigorously. But dont worry, it comes quickly! There are a number of techniques that will allow you to dissociate your hands faster.

This song has BECOME traditional — according to Wikipedia, Happy Birthday is the most-recognized song in the English language.

However, the writers are known to history — two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill, who wrote the song in 1893.

Originally the words weren’t Happy Birthday at all, but “Good morning to you, good morning to you. Good morning, dear children, good morning to you!”

Born in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s from the middle-class young generation, the genre literally means new trend. Their work was later brought to the US and, in 1964, Gilberto, his wife, and Jobim worked alongside the American Stan Getz to record the legendary album Getz/Gilberto. The album sold more than 2 million copies in the year of 1964 alone.

The bossa nova tells stories of love, romances, beach life, and the sweetness of life. Perfect for a birthday celebration!
