Reid Park Zoo Celebrating 5th Birthday For Nandi The African Elephant

Reid Park Zoo celebrating 5th birthday for Nandi the African elephant

TUCSON, Ariz. The Reid Park Zoo will be hosting a birthday celebration for African elephant Nandi in honor of her fifth birthday Sunday morning.

The activities will go from 8 a.m. through 10 a.m. in the Expedition Tanzania Area.

Reid Park Zoo is encouraging the community to come out and celebrate with Nandi.

We are celebrating her life and birthday, but we are also celebrating the lives of wild elephant herds too, says Sue Tygielski, PhD, Director of Zoo Operations.

Reid Park Zoo says Nandi has learned many skills and the zoo wants to commemorate those accomplishments with activities for both her and the guests.

Scheduled activities:

  • 8:10 a.m. Free birthday cupcakes for the first 100 guests
  • 8:15 a.m. African drumming and dancing presented by African Diaspora Showcase
  • 8:30 a.m. Sing Happy Birthday to Nandi and watch her receive her favorite treats
  • 8:45 a.m. – Elephant dance performance by African Diaspora Showcase
  • 9:00 a.m. Elephant-themed activities and keeper chats

While this will be a celebration for Nandi, the zoo wants to remind and educate everyone about poaching, habitat loss and human conflict. Elephants are vulnerable species and there are actions that can be taken at home, like not purchasing ivory. says Tygielski.

The zoo will demonstrate how they care for Nandi and the other elephants.

The birthday celebration is free with zoo admission. Adults are $10.50, seniors are $8.50, and children are $6.50.

More At Home Birthday Party Ideas

Create your own cupcake decorating kits. Just buy the frosting, sprinkles and pre-made cupcakes divide them up into kits before dropping them off for each guest. Local bakeries might sell these pre-made, I havent seen any yet in Tucson. The same idea could work for decorating cookies too! Also check with your local donut shop, some Dunkin Donuts have been offering donut decorating kits.

Papa Murphys offer Mini Murph kits letting kids make their own personal pizzas. Let guests prep their own pizzas and while they are waiting they can reuse the pizza box to craft their own solar oven. Now depending upon the time of the party and weather, guests could make solar oven smores after eating pizza.

Another fun idea is to let kids create and decorate their own Rice Krispies treats houses. Just pre-make the decorating kits ahead of time and drop them off ahead of time to guests. They are fun to make year-round, not just around the holidays.

If you have attendees spread throughout the country, you could pick up arts & crafts kits or LEGO building kits and have them delivered via Amazon to each guest. This idea lets you customize your childs birthday party activity.

Board games with friends via Zoom is also a new trend, although getting enough copies of the same game to everyone might be difficult. A virtual scavenger hunt might be a fun alternative.

N4t Investigators: Reid Park Zoo Surprised And Disappointed By Mayors Call For Halt On Expansion

TUCSON – Tucson Mayor Regina Romero is calling for a pause on the planned expansion of the Reid Park Zoo, which has been years in the making.

The expansion would make room for a tiger habitat and would end up consuming the South duck pond and adjacent hill.

In 2017, voters passed a measure for capital improvements at the zoo. In the Mayors statement released Wednesday, she said the 2017 ballot language was to fund capital improvements, operations, and maintenance and did not mention expansion.

“It has become clear to me that resolution to this issue is not on the horizon,” Romero said. “This is why I am compelled as Mayor to help find common ground by calling for a pause on this project so that the different parties can come to the table.

News 4 Tucson Investigators asked the mayor for an interview Thursday but her staff said she was too busy.

The mayors statement now perhaps makes her the most influential voice to call for further review of the planned expansion. But it is not that simple. There is much more that has to be done before they hit the brakes.

Tucson City Council needs to decide how to proceed.

At the end of December, Wendy Sampson filed an open meetings violation complaint with the Arizona Attorney Generals Office. In that complaint, she highlighted the language used for the 2017 ballot. She was happy to see the mayors position.

Sampson said she has not heard anything further from the Attorney Generals Office.

Not only was she born on Tucsons birthday,August 20, 2014, but she was the first elephant born in Arizona, right at Tucsons Reid Park Zoo.

“The city of Tucson really kind of adopted her as their own, Lead Elephant Professional, Savannah Beck said.

Now, nearly five years later, KOLD News 13 decided to check in on her and see how shes doing ahead of her big five!

After talking to zoo keepers, specialists say she is hitting all her landmarks for learning.

“We are constantly keeping up with her training, making sure she hits all the landmarks as well she has either met or exceeded those markers, said Beck.

Beck said elephants are among the top three smartest animals in the animal kingdom, with the learning ability of a four to five-year-old child.

They work with Nandi on her training so that she can actively participate as they take care of her. Although, the training might just look like cute tricks to those watching, it goes beyond that.

Beck gave an example. “If they see us asking for a foot, its likely so we can file her foot, ” said Beck. All these behaviors help the trainers in her care.

Nandi has exceeded the expectations her care team has set for her. Physically, she is right on the mark for her age.

At birth Nandi weighed 245 lbs and now, at five years old, she weights 3, 350 lbs.
