The National Building Museums Summer Block Party Returns With An Outdoor Outing

Equilateral Network

While the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. may not be transforming its soaring Great Hall into a beach, a hammock-equipped open lawn, or a head-scratching plywood labyrinth this year, it is back in warm weather celebratory mode for the 2021 edition of its Summer Block Party series. It will just be minus the massive, immersive installations that normally anchor the annual summertime exhibition.

Realizing that museum-goers are still slowly easing back into public life and may not be ready to cope with large indoor crowds or want to dive into an ersatz mini-ocean filled with translucent plastic balls , the National Building Museum has organized a post-pandemic event that will bring people together but at a more intimate scale.

Whats more, the museum is playing host to the fourth annual DowntownDC Summer FlicksCan I Kick It?, a free outdoor movie series produced by the BID with local DJ collective Shaolin Jazz. This years science fiction-focused theme is The Future and will feature weekly Tuesday night screenings with each scored with an original music soundtrack of hip-hop, soul, and more mixed by rotating guest DJs. Screenings begin at sunset, with the series concluding on July 27.

The National Building Museum reopened to the public on April 9 after being shuttered since December 2019 due to both planned renovations and then the COVID-19 crisis.

The Washington Dc Institution Scheduled A Variety Of Indoor And Outdoor Events And Installations

The National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., has announced the return of its Summer Block Party. The museum’s 2020 Summer Block Party, a partnership with Folger Shakespeare Library, was postponed due to COVID-19.

The 2021 Summer Block party will include indoor and outdoor programming, including artist meet-and-greets, interactive lawn art, and outdoor film screenings hosted in partnership with the DowntownDC Business Improvement District. The event will also include a number of installations, including a book-filled wooden maze by the local sculptor Foon Sham, a truss for the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, and a pavilion from Boston- and Kigali, Rwandabased MASS Design Group.

Host Your Next Historic Event At The Smithsonians National Postal Museum

The National Postal Museum is engaging in third party rentals of the museums event spaces as of April 1, 2022. This decision was based on multiple considerations including the ever-changing nature of the health landscape and the Smithsonian Institutions decision to extend the reopening timeline for many of our museums, including the National Postal Museum.

Consistent with Smithsonian Institution policy, we allow external parties to book National Postal Museum rental spaces with a “soft hold,” which would not require a deposit or executed contract, but would be subject to any social distancing or other criteria that may be in place, and which may be cancelled by the National Postal Museum for any reason.

We appreciate your understanding.

The Smithsonians National Postal Museum is devoted to the colorful and engaging history of the nations mail service and showcases the largest and most comprehensive collection of stamps and philatelic material in the world. Re: Birthday Parties For Children

    Subject:Date:

I used to work at the National Building Museum in DC . They do birthday parties for children ages 6-11. After lots of experience they have figured out the different regulations that are necessary to ensure success

A lot of great information is on their website – there you’ll find the regulations, FAQ, etc. Like everyone has been saying, they are a lot of work, but were successful at the Building Museum.

I have done one birthday party at the historic house I currently work at. It was a special request from a board member. The biggest problem was that the parent had guessed 14 kids would show, but we actually had 22, which was really over the capacity we had in the room. I don’t think I’ll be offering them as a regular program, since we don’t have the great flexible classroom spaces that the building museum had and it is a little more dangerous to the collection to have the more hyper birthday-goers than the calmer school kids or scouts.

New Years Eve At The National Building Museum: Why I No Longer Attend Parties

    The aftermath.

As a rule, New Years Eve and I are not particularly friendly. I am a wimp, hate the cold, hate crowds even more and enjoy few things more than curling up on a cold winters night with a big bottle of Merlot and some Twilight Zone marathon. Um, I mean. Insane partying. Yeah

As this was my first New Years Eve in DC, I decided to attempt to shed my complete nerd-dom and hit the town. Upon reviewing my options I was lured in by the National Building Museum party. It seemed like it could be fun black tie optional, get a cute new dress, top shelf booze flowing like water, champagne, and of course, the gorgeous museum as a backdrop . I am not a Georgetown scenester but I can say that I did not doubt the abilities of the party planners . All in all, I steeled myself for what should have been and could have been a fun night.

When we arrived, a cold rain blanketed the city and we were forced to stand outside for approximately 45 minutes waiting to get in. This was baffling to me, especially once I realized that no one was even checking tickets or IDs. Hm. Very well, we were in, we were safe and drying off. On to the booze!
