Old Forester 1910 Extra Old Bourbon Is The Third 117 Series Release

Alternatives for Old Forester Birthday Bourbon. Only On Whiskeytube.

The Brown Foreman distillery is releasing a pint sized unicorn for all of you 1910 lovers. This drop is officially dubbed the Old Forester 117 Series 1910 Extra Old bourbon release.

The Old Forester 117 Series gets its name from the distillerys address, more specifically the Main Street number where it resides in Louisville, Kentucky. This New Bourbon release is part of a 375ml line that began in the spring of 2021. The first bottle released was High Angels Share, followed by Warehouse K, and now 1910 Extra Old. This release marks the first finished whiskey in that series.

Nonetheless, this allocated bourbon is featured on our bourbon release calendar for the month of February. We review everything whiskey lovers need to know from price to proof. Old Forester 1910 Extra Old takes a Straight Whiskey and finishes it in another cask for an additional aging period. This is similar to another Brown-Forman bourbon we just covered, Woodford Reserve Doubled Double Oaked.

This release in The 117 Series is a curious exploration into the intensity of the proprietary heavily charred 1910 barrel, Master Taster Jackie Zykan states. This liquid was allowed to rest for 18 months in this secondary barrel, extracting significantly more of the heavily charred influence.

Review: Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2021 Edition

The first big release of fall whiskey season Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, which celebrates the birthday of founder George Garvin Brown on September 2 has arrived. This years release is a batch of 119 barrels which were distilled on April 16,2009, making it a 12 year old expression. Its bottled at 104 proof .

Big and brash on the nose, fans of Old Foresters higher-proof expressions will find plenty to enjoy here. Its sharp with charred barrel character, dusky and heavy with spices, pepper, and some dill, before letting some dark chocolate come into focus. As you might expect, the palate feels a bit closed off and frontier-like, the barrel doing most of the heavy lifting here. In time some more interesting elements come to the fore, including citrus, cinnamon, and a reprise of cocoa powder.

The finish remains a bit gritty, tight, and quite spice-heavy. While at first blush the experience feels a little dusty, theres an effusive depth of flavor just under the surface that is well worth exploring.

104 proof.

Your whiskey MSRP reference chart

Does browsing through certain online liquor stores infuriate anyone else? Everything I want is either sold out or marked up. And Im not someone to go to secondary markets where you can usually find whatever you want albeit at a very high price. But its not just online. Often I walk into a liquor store and see absurd prices for booze. $200 for Blantons? Get out of here. And yet, people buy it.

I cant blame liquor stores though. The demand is there for certain allocated brands or releases, so customers will pay way over MSRP to get them. Ive been that customer more than once, however usually by accident. I always feel duped when I find out that I just paid much more for a bottle than its worth. But Im not always on my price-checking-game when Im browsing a bottle shop. Alright, Ill hop off my soapbox now.

Recently Bourbon Culture posted The Bourbon Brown Book-2020 Edition where they listed the retail price of rare and allocated American whiskeys released in 2020 versus their secondary market price. I thought that was such a great idea. I would love to have this reference in my back pocket every time I step into a bottle shop. Luckily, cell phones exist, so this can live in my back pocket . So I pulled from their list and expanded upon it to include more than just 2020 releases and allocated bourbons.

The 12 Most Commonly Flipped Whiskies

Old Forester 2020 Birthday Bourbon Review

June 29, 2020 | Whisky Advocate

Wondering which whiskies are most flipped, sold, or traded on the secondary market? We scoured a half-dozen private Facebook and MeWe groups to compile this list, averaging the various prices at which the bottles sold. To get a better understanding of how and why these bottles are so in-demand, check out our exclusive report that goes deep into the world black market bourbon.

MSRP: $80Secondary Market Price: $525 The poster child for whiskey flipping due to its rarity and high demand. The prevalence of counterfeits often requires multiple photos, showcasing fill level, laser code, and foil seals.

MSRP: $37Secondary Market Price: $150 The potential margins on this bottle are generous and, given the scattered national allocation, people in some regions where it isnt distributed will pay as much as $200.

MSRP: $60Secondary Market Price: $120+Depending on the date it was dumped from the barrel, as stated on the label, this whiskeys prices can fluctuate immensely. People searching for specific dates to commemorate anniversaries or birthdates will pay $300 or more.

MSRP: $150 Secondary Market Price: $300 This decadent wheated sipper from Heaven Hill is its oldest release yet, contributing to high demand on the secondary market. Semi-annual releases create more opportunities to buy, but also seem to increase demand.

Tiers Of Allocated Bourbon

I have ranked these bourbons based on how hard it is to find and obtain. Obviously, these may vary regionally, according to the season and the total amount of bottles sold. And realistically, some brands are more coveted then others.

Youll see that many Buffalo Trace items are listed as Tier 1 items, but thats just the way it is with as many fans that BT has.

Tier 3 Allocated bottles that are somewhat easy to find and could be found on a shelf in most cases.

These are dependable annual releases with most having multiple releases per year.

Tier 2 The difference between Tier 3 and 2 is that Tier 2 items are typically more expensive and may only be released once a year.

Also, Ill include distillery-only releases in here as well because unless you live in Kentucky, then its not fair.

Tier 1 These are the hardest to find allocated bottles and the ones that command the highest secondary prices.

Youll realistically not find these bottles on the shelf. Youll always have to know somebody to get them.

Review & Tasting Notes

This release marks the 21st edition of Birthday Bourbon, launched back in 2002. It has grown to become one of the most highly sought after Old Forester offerings. Over the course of this vintage-dated bourbon, it has ranged from 90 to 105 proof. The age statements have ranged from 9-14 years.

This years batch is the second-highest proofing to date at 104 proof, while also proclaiming a 12-year age statement. The 2021 release is derived from 119 barrels that were all filled on April 16th, 2009. Those barrels were then aged in Warehouse G to mature.

Each release is rare and unique to the year, therefore one-of-a-kind flavor profiles that are never recreated. As for the 2021 Old Forester Birthday Bourbon tasting notes, we outline each segment below.

Color

Golden Citrine

Nose

Aroma: A beautiful symphony of berry and dessert components. Red raspberry preserves join plump, juicy blackberries and dried strawberries to set the tone, nestled in a bed of dried herbs and balanced with vanilla creme brulee, subtle pecan, rich maple syrup, and cocoa.

Palate

Taste: Rich and inviting, the velvety mouthfeel carries notes of buttery caramel, burnt sugar, and a touch of fresh baked Linzer cookie. This silky palate quickly awakens into a bright, peppery, peripheral spice.

Finish

Lengthy and warm with subtle dryness. Subdued notes of chocolate, raisin and cool herbs linger in the shadow of stark oak spice.

TASTE: Rye Spice | Oak | Faint Sweet Honey | Green Apple

While young, this is a blend to share with your drink curious not too judgy friends.

WORTH THE PRICE: I found Ingram an interesting expression. I am generally a Midwest Grain Products fan, and I like to support craft distillers/blenders with innovative ideas. With all that being said, at over $70 for a less than 4-year-old, sourced, blended whiskey, this would be a tough sell for me.

BOTTLE, BAR OR BUST: This whiskey is not a bust. It has interest and depth that you wouldnt expect by its age. The blending is done well and with the innovative take on aging, I will give it a BAR rating. Try it first, if you can, before you buy. In the fifty dollar range, I would be tempted to go bottle.

Old Foresters Birthday Bourbon was one of the OGs of limited edition bourbon before limited edition bourbon was really a thing.

Ever since the inaugural bottling was released at the turn of the millennium, Old Forester has kept the distinct bottle shape along with the same release date every year.

Each Fall, right around bourbon release season, the anticipation and hype around Birthday Bourbon grows as more enthusiasts come into the scene.

Not everyone views OFBB with such enthusiasm though. Some enthusiasts claim that the proof is too low, making it seem outclassed by some of the higher proof bruisers .

But the point of Birthday Bourbons ever-changing bottling proof isnt to overwhelm your senses into barrel-proof oblivion, its to revel in the perfect proof that each batch tastes best at.

Thats why every year, the tasting panel at Old Forester convenes to taste through that years batch at every proof point from barrel proof all the way down to 80 proof.

This is all done in an effort to identify the sweet spot of exactly where the best flavors exist. For 2012, the proof that was determined to be the best was 97.

Release Date & Availability

As we previously noted, this bourbon release date isnt really negotiable due to the symbolism behind the entire lines concept. It coincides with the birthday of Old Foresters Founder, George Garvin Brown.

Therefore, it is expected to be released every September 2nd. The presser for its official release launched on July 8th, 2021. Thus, confirming that September 2, 2021 will be a highly anticipated day for bourbon lovers around the globe.

You will be able to buy this new bourbon release at the Old Forester Distilling Co. gift shop in Louisville, KY. Additionally, it will be available at select retailers nationwide.

As for allocation, there were 119 barrels filled during production. Without factoring in the angels share and the proofing process, this equates to roughly 6,307 gallons of this fine juice. Relative to the allocation for the 2020 release, 2021 should see around a 25% increase in bottles available.

It’s Nearly Impossible To Find A Bottle On Its 20th Release

Old Forester 2018 Birthday Bourbon Review

What were drinking: Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, its 20th iteration.

Where its from: Old Forester has been around for 150 years and is revered as the first bourbon to be sealed in a glass bottle. The Birthday Bourbon is an annual release to celebrate founder George Garvin Browns birthday on September 2nd.

The Birthday Bourbon releases all hail fromone days production from a particular year this time out, that means a total of 95 barrels aged 10 years then bottled at 98 proof, though prior years had seen anywhere from 9- to 14-year-old barrels.

Why were drinking this: Because we may never get a chance to do so again.

Outside of 2020, the annual Birthday Bourbon is one of those releases where people line up overnight and camp out for a bottle which is difficult in Louisville, a city with a fairly new law that made sleeping outside illegal. Last year we just plied everyone in line with coffee, says Jackie Zykan, Old Forester Master Taster.

So basically, outside of this distillery line, these releases are pretty much gone before they officially hit the shelves. You have to know the liquor store owner, admits Zykan. But there are some ways around this and grey/black markets well discuss that below.

Zykan really sums it up well: Flavor-wise, I think this captures the true essence of what Kentucky bourbon is supposed to taste like: sweet on the front, spicy on the back, a little bit dry, oak forward, but balanced and palatable.

Msrp & Secondary Price

Birthday Bourbon is available in a 750ml offering for an MSRP of $130. Being as it is a highly sought after offering with limited allocation, secondary market prices will demand many times over that that retail price.

Suggested retail pricing is set for $130. However, anyone who has looked for this bourbon personally can attest that it is a major find if you can spot it in the wild. Moreover, if youre willing to pay secondary prices, get ready to pony up for around $1,000 or more per bottle.

Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2012 Release

2012s release is somewhat interesting because Old Forester claims that the typical Old Forester mashbill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley was adjusted during the fermentation process by adding in an additional 2% of malted barley.

This is not as unusual as it sounds! Most people dont realize that MGP and Four Roses use the same mashbill even though they tweak them slightly to look different on paper. In reality, they will adjust their malted barley content by up to 2% each way to compensate for variations during fermentation.

So now that we know the specs behind this release, lets see how well they did. I sampled this neat in a glencairn.
