I threw a Candy Land party for my last daughters double digit party. I used the game story as my travel through Candy Land in search of King Kandy. After each character paragraph read, we’d play a quick game, read another paragraph, another game. I had the basement decorated thickly in streamers and balloons to give a candy land feel. We ended the party watching Barbies Sugar Plum Princess . This was a sleepover.
For the cake, I made an ice cream/ cake cake. The bottom circle pan and top small circle pan were made of cake and the middle pan was peppermint ice cream. I decorated with egg white fluff frosting and sprinkled licorice, gum drops, crushed peppermint candies, and upright lollipops around. We had molasses cookies and peanut brittle for snacks. It was a big hit with all girls ages 9-12. It may sound young, but I felt it was the last real kid party she’d ever have.

Favorite Things Party Favors
The party favors were most like a traditional favorite things party. We haggled over five items to give our guests, trying to keep within a certain budget, choose a variety of gifts, and get a nice mix of colors. The girls helped me decorate the favor bags and then guests loaded their own bags. They also got to keep their mani pedi flip flops, toe separators, and glitter nail files.

Creating A Theme Out Of Thin Air
One girl wanted teal and purple. The other wanted neon green and yellow. One wanted sea shells and smores. The other wanted sharks and softballs. One wanted a big bash away from home and the other wanted a small party at our house. There was no agreement to be found.
So I dubbed the party favorite things and a theme was born. Turning to Pinterest for inspiration was interesting because the favorite things parties I found were mainly Christmas exchange parties for moms, where everyone brings enough of one gift their favorite thing for each guest. I was not about to ask guests to bring their own party favors. Instead, our focus was sharing the girls favorites with their friends. And this twins party by Lil Hoot really encapsulated what I wanted our party to be.
I had each girl make four lists: favorite colors, food, activities, and gifts. Commonalities between the lists narrowed down our choices. Of course, the girls disagreed on some activities, but they also understood the balance we were going for and came around.
In my search for style and cohesion, I imposed a few design choices:
- Neon green and teal as our primary party colors
- Polka dots, so we could bring in some warmer colors
- A crisp, clean white for a spa feel
- And Lindi of Love the Day to create custom printables that pulled everything together
