I have done lots of parties and I thought it was time I share my 20 best ideas with you. Plus my tips and tricks on how to keep kids focused and happy.

Ill group the arts and crafts into categories. But just know that there is lots of crossover, and you can really choose anything and adapt it to your childs age.

First I will share all of the art projects, then I will share my tips and tricks and talk about how to set yourself up for success!

Indoor Activity #1: Paper Bag Puppets

Prep Time: 5-10 minutes

  • Paper lunch bags and construction paper.
  • Googly eyes, yarn, piper cleaners, pom poms, or cotton balls.
  • Glue, tape, and scissors.

The best part of paper bag puppets is that its a two-part activity and one that can be split up with a cake break. First, using the provided arts-and-crafts supplies , the kids can draw, cut, color, and glue stuff to their bags. Provide templates of popular characters for the kids whod rather make Cookie Monster than a creature of their own imagination. After the puppets are finished, have a makeshift stage set up in another room and let the experimental puppet theater begin.

Who Has The Button

Image: Shutterstock

This is a simple game that requires only a simple button from a shirt, coat, or skirt. And it also needs all the attention from the girls. It can be played with younger kids too.

You will need:

Number of players: 10-12

How to:

  • Gather the girls in a circle, and ask them to hold their hands together such that their palms touch their fingers.
  • Choose one person to be It and ask her to stand in the center of the circle. It should also hold her hands together like the others.
  • It takes the button and goes around the circle, putting her hands between the palms of each girl, and secretly drops the button with one of the other players .
  • Once the circle is complete, It comes back to her position, and the girls say Button, button, who has the button?
  • Anyone in the circle can guess who has the button if they guess right, they become It and start the next round!
  • Occasion: Birthdays, girls slumber party

Best Birthday Party Activities For Children

    #partygamesforall

Ive been sharing children/s birthday party ideas for over a decade, and Ive come across tons of fun birthday party activities for kids. So if youre planning your childs birthday party, come along Ive got just the activity for you!

A word on selecting the best party activity for your childs birthday party. You know your child best. And you want your childs birthday party to be fun. But here are a few things to remember when picking out a game or activity for the party.

    • Age of the Children Keep in mind the ages of the party guests and select an activity suited for that age group. Younger children will need parental help for arts and crafts activities. Older children have a lot of energy to burn off so stick to activities like backyard tag and anything that lets them run!
    • Weather You cant predict the weather but try to always keep it in mind and prepare a rain plan!
    • Your Childs Interests You might envision the perfect birthday party activity but try to choose a game or activity that you know your birthday girl or birthday boy will love!
    • Helping Hands Some activities are naturally more messy than others. Arts and crafts? Consider having a few extra parents on hand to help along and perhaps having smocks or large t-shirts to avoid messy clothes.

    Indoor Activity #: Ping

    Prep Time:

    • Ping pong balls
    • Prizes. For the full carnival effect, roll with stuffed animals.

Anybody whos ever played beer pong knows the deal here , except in this county fair version of the game each cup is worth a certain point value. After labeling the inside of each cup with a random number from 1-5, set up 15 Solo cups on the floor in a 5-row pyramid . Put a piece of tape on the floor several feet away, behind which the shooter should stand, and have each kid throw five ping pong balls. Add up and record the total points for balls landing in the cups before moving on to the next child. After a set number of rounds, add up the total scores and declare a winner. Final thought: if you have the time, glue all the cups to a giant piece of cardboard before the party that way its ready to go and cups wont accidentally get knocked over.

Indoor Activity #1: The Puzzle Hunt

5 Birthday Party Games For Kids

Prep time: 0-5 minutesWhat youll need:

    • Floor puzzles

A Puzzle Hunt is like a treasure hunt except it is indoors, and kids are hunting for pieces of oversized puzzle pieces that have been hidden in a designated room in order to assemble it so they can win a prize. This is an excellent way to segue to cake time because you can make the prize be time for cake. If you have a larger group, you can hide several puzzle sets and assign teams to find the pieces to hunting for the pieces of their assigned puzzle. The first group to assemble their puzzle pieces could be the first group to get cake .

How I Come Up With Our Birthday Party Activities:

Every party we have had has some sort of theme. Henrys first birthday party was blocks. His 2nd party was just a party theme. His 3rd birthday was tractors and his 4th was semis . This year were doing monster trucks!

I then take that theme and plan an activity for the kids to do. Much like I do most of our activities here. I base it off my kids interests to make sure theyre going to have a great time with it. I then treat the activity as an invitation to play.

Its something thats there if the kids want to play with it, but they dont have to. And its something that the kids can do together and on their own

All of my birthday parties have stations and the kids can travel freely between them. I love not having to direct the party any more than I absolutely have to. Joyce of Childhood Beckons

This one is ideal for a rainbow- or fairy-themed party, but you can adjust the clothing choices based on your partys theme. You will need two similar sets of clothing that in total make up the colors of a rainbow. For example, a red shirt, a blue hat, a green sock, a yellow skirt, and so on. Divide players into two teams and have them line up at a starting point. Each team will be given one of the sets of clothing. The first player on each team has to put on all the clothing, run to a turnaround spot, run back to her team, take off the clothes and hand them off to the next player.
