Cheap Birthday Party Ideas For Your Teenager In The Backyard

How to make Friends theme teenage girl boy teen teenagers birthday cake design ideas decorating

Your backyard can be an amazing venue for a fun teen birthday party. With some decorations and a creative theme, your teen will have so much fun being celebrated!

  • Slip N Slide: If you have a hill in your yard, you can set up an epic water slide! One of our favorite ways to DIY a huge slide is using thick plastic sheeting from a home improvement store. Use garden stakes to hold the plastic down and keep the hose anchored at the top. You can also add foam or bubbles for extra fun.
  • Beach Party: Set up small blow up pools for a pool party or just hook up the sprinkler. Pretend your at the beach or even throwing a luau party on a tropical island. Pick up some faux lays from the dollar store and some little unbrellas for a signature fruit punch.
  • Outdoor Movie Party: Take your movie night to the next level by having an outdoor party on a blow-up screen! You can ask to borrow a screen and projector from a neighbor or rent one from a local company. If you have several kids, a $200 investment can get you your own screen and projector that you can use again and again. Set up a snack stand with sodas, popcorn, and other treats. Let the birthday kid choose the movie and have blankets, pillows, and camp chairs available.
  • Backyard Roast Party: If you have a backyard firepit, you can purchase hotdogs and smore fixings. Have music playing and camp chairs available for a simple but fun celebration. Set up a photo booth and grab some inexpensive camping photo props to create memories.

Rent A Hotel Room For The Night

A great way to host a fun birthday party and keep the mess out of your house is to rent a hotel room for the night. Depending on the number of kids in attendance, you can even book adjoining rooms so they can all be together and have fun until the wee hours of the morning . A few ideas:

  • Since hotel rooms are typically fairly small, you can make a BIG impression with even a few decorations including number balloons, helium balloons, streamers, etc.
  • Make the evening special: Whether the kids venture out for a night on the town or head to the hotel pool and jacuzzi for an evening of fun and laughs, be sure to plan something to keep the kids occupied.
  • Chaperone: Depending on the age of the kids, theres a good chance youll need to book a hotel room across the hall just to keep your eye on things and make sure theyre safe. Older teenagers are likely fine on their own and can be dropped off and picked up the next morning.

How To Prepare Your Tween Or Teen For A Holiday Dinner

First things first, parents can play a vital role in helping tweens and teens have an enjoyable holidayeven if there will be holiday guests whose comments tend to skew on the insensitive side. Here’s how they can prepare:

Help them feel their best: If they’ll need to wear something more dressy than usual for a holiday dinner, have your kid try on their clothes ahead of time so that you have time to help find them something they feel comfortable in. Kids in puberty say there is nothing worse than being forced to wear something that doesn’t fit well.

Avoid food issues: If you have a child with eating challenges, make sure there will be food they like at the meal, otherwise bring some with you.

And if you have friends or family who like to police other people’s eating, you can tell your kid before you go: “So-and-so has a different attitude about food than our family does. You eat what you want and if you run into any issues, let me know.”

Reach out to relatives beforehand: If you have family members who tend to make comments about other people’s appearances, you can reach out to them ahead of time and politely ask them not to comment on your kid’s skin/height/weight/breasts/voice changes etc.

If you know there will be people who really want to connect with the kids in the room, but often say awkward things, you can also be in touch before the holiday and offer some suggestions of topics your kid does like to talk about.

Should Relatives Be Invited To A Teenagers Birthday

Should adults celebrate a teenagers birthday with friends? Often, parents invite their adult company to the teenagers birthday.

Grandparents, uncles and aunts, other relatives and friends of the family gather to admire the birthday man and congratulate his happy parents.

Of course, parents have the right to share their joy with these close people, but the teenager himself considers, as a rule, that sitting at home with his family is childish and annoying, and he is right in some ways.

Indeed, for all the relatives present, he remains a child. After congratulations, completely adult talks begin that are of no interest to the teenager, during which he plays only the role of decoration.

If you cannot refuse a family celebration with relatives divide the company. Let the teenager accept the congratulations of adults, but his main holiday will still be separate, with a group of friends. Best of all, if these two events are generally possible to be held not on the same day, but different ones.

First, it is your teenagers birthday. Well, the next day or next weekend family gatherings with relatives. It is unlikely that the teenager will refuse to extend his holiday for another day, but the solemn family feast, in this case, will not seem so burdensome to him.

A teenagers birthday is, first of all, not different chores, but a holiday with a capital letter. Let this holiday become the most beloved and unforgettable for your teenager!

Plus, wintertime offers cool themes like a winter wonderland and sweet Candy land inspired goodies.

Survive A Fear Factor Party

A Fear Factor theme will make for a hilarious party that will be talked about for years! Inspired by the show that tests contestants to fight their fears through a range of trials, this party will have kids screaming in delight. Set up a series of challenges and have kids progress through different levels until an overall winner can be determined. Allow kids to opt-out at any time to keep the challenge fun rather than too scary. Trials can include:

  • Egg challenge: Prepare a bowl of hard-boiled eggs and challenge kids to pick one and crack it on their forehead. One or two eggs will be raw. You can award points for bravery as well as choosing the right egg.
  • Worm rescue: Fill a container with chocolate pudding, or jello and put candy worms at the bottom. Tie kids’ hands behind their back and time them to retrieve as many worms as possible in a one-minute period. The person with the highest number of rescued worms is the winner!
  • Guess what’s inside: Put a variety of objects into boxes with a hole cut in the side, then have kids put their hand in and try to guess what is inside. Choose things that feel horrible to touch like cold spaghetti, hair, cotton wool balls, slime, egg whites, kiwi fruit, or mashed banana.

Location: Home

Ideal age: 15th birthday and up

Things to remember: Make sure to check for any allergies and keep a watchful eye to make sure all the kids are happy to play.

Cost prediction: $50-100 depending on the ingredients and decorations chosen

Your Guide to The Best Teen Birthday Party Ideas

You might fondly remember how easy it was to make your young child happy with a cake, balloons, some friends, and party games.

Now that your teenage child is older and a bit harder to please, you might worry about what youre going to do for your teenagers upcoming birthday.

Theres no need to worry, as there are many amazing teenage birthday party ideas that I will share with you below.

Whether your teen is happy to have a party at home, or would prefer to do something outdoors, there are several options to choose from.

The best way to decide on the perfect teenage birthday party for your child is to read through all the options and then discuss these with them. Once you know how many kids your teen wants to invite and what kind of party theyd like, then you can start planning all the finer details like location, theme, decor, food, music, games, date, and time.

Every child is different, which is why I dont specify which party idea is best for a particular age group. Whether your 16-year-old only wants to hang with some of his best mates, or your 14-year-old is keen on having a neon glow dance party with all the kids in their class, we have a party idea that will be perfect for them.

  • Safety discuss your rules, dos and donts, and have adult supervision.

Other Older Boy Birthday Party Details

  • Set a time limit on the party so you dont have kids in your yard or basement for an eternity. It can be anywhere from a couple hours to an overnight. But share an end of the party time with parents from the get-go so everyone is clear when the party ends.
  • Ask about or create some special perks for the birthday kid. Depending where you hold the party, there might be options for a badge or keepsake or something else to make the day extra special. We threw Happy 11th Birthday Luke! up on the scoreboard at a minor league baseball game for no extra cost. I just asked when I called to book the tickets.
  • Consider the number of guests your son wants to include. Some birthday party options might limit the number of party guests and others work well for a large group. Ask your son what close friends he might want to invite. If hes leaning toward a more expensive option, let him know only his closest friends or best friend could come.
  • Toss out the party all together. One year, my sons actually chose to trade all birthday gifts and parties for a long weekend family trip to Universal Studios
