You might not expect rural Georgia to hold one of the worlds largest and most extensive collections of international art, but the Michael C. Carlos Museum does it.
Its an absolute treasure trove of ancient cultures from around the globe, including Rome, Greece, Nubia, ancient Egypt, pre-Columbia America and more.
Some of the pieces are the old paintings and sculptures that youd expect.
Others are more dynamic.
There are mummy urns and stone sarcophagus coffins there are totems, pots, jewels, busts and incense burners.
One particularly noteworthy artifact was a headless statue of a Greek goddess.
The museum purchased the body from an auction, and after hearing the news, the owner of the head came forward and sold that to them as well.
After 150 years, the statue was finally whole again!
All things considered, the Michael C. Carlos Museum is one of the most fun things to do in Atlanta.
You could even say that the museum itself is a relic from the past: Built in 1876, its among the oldest museums in Georgia, so it has its own history to add depth and interest to its sightseeing potential.
