Further Ideas And Activities

The activities above should keep the children entertained for an hour to an hour and half. If you need some filler activities you could play a space version of musical chairs, with the children being spaceships that need to find a planet to land on when the music stops. If you want the kids to run around, perhaps as a way of getting some energy out, then play solid, liquid or gas. Tell the kids they are going to behave like atoms do in different states. When you shout gas they must run around, whizzing all over. When you shout liquid they will need to walk slowly, arms waving and pretending to float around. When you shout solid they must all stand very still.

One New York City mother I know plays Estimation. Shell begin the housekeeping with her children by saying, Guess how many jackets there are all over the floor? or, How many unmatched socks do you think well have after we match them all up? Does it work? It definitely gets them started, she says.

A dad I know in Rochester, New York, worked with his two sons, ages 6 and 7, to make a garden. They chose the seeds, counted them out, decided where each would go and, in the end, ate what they grew. Most of their math work came in the equity thing, the dad told me, they made sure one of them didnt get more seeds than the other!

I can attest that, Guess how many minutes until the waiter brings the food? works as a math and that its equally fun for a 3-year-old as an 8-year-old. When the crackers for the soup come, I ask my daughter to divide them up evenly among us. She figured it out. Its surprising how many everyday opportunities exist to teach math that is fun and productive.

Diy Science Party For Kids

May 18, 2018 By Emma Vanstone

Lots of people ask me about parties and the best experiments to keep children entertained at a science party. Science Sparks is full of fun, safe and hands-on science investigations that would make great party activities, but here are some I think would work brilliantly for a childrens science party at home.

Mad Science Party Dcor

Mad Science Party décor can really pull your party together. Head to the Dollar tree and get a few odds and ends. Grab a snake for this adorable snake in a jar mad scientist display. Just add a little food coloring. Something round for eggs and have your very own science lab. | Birds Party

Of course no one can get in the lab of a scientist without the right qualifications. Add this Scan to Enter Sign to the front door of your mad science birthday party. Each child could even make their own at the birthday party and hang it on their bedroom door at home. | The Muddy Princess

This is adorable and easy. Make an atomic mobile over the kids eating area out of simple spray-painted Dollar Tree hula hoops, zip ties, and balloons! Low cost childs birthday party décor in the craft of easy-peasy molecules. Having a few of these at various heights would be very decorative. | Karas Party Ideas

If you are good with balloon garland or a novice willing to give it a try, grab a balloon garland kit to create bubbles coming out of a beaker. Instead of a beaker or science lab, you could have this coming out of a volcano and do a fun glow in the dark volcano experiment at the party. |

I always get inspired by looking at what others do. Recreate this mad science party table. I love how the science banner looks like the periodic table of elements. It would be very easy to make your own or grab a science birthday party banner on Etsy. | Catch My Party

Party Details As Told By Amy

Who doesnt like a party loaded with fun science experiments? My son who just turned 8 asked for a Mad Science party so I delivered one! A Mad Science party is so much fun to design and put together. I am not a very science oriented person so it took me some time to gather up all the research online so we could have a true science celebration! We prepared 5 awesome experiments for everyone and they had a blast! Plus, lots of DIYs!

I had the honor again to work with my favorite designer, Tania from Tanias Design Studio. She inspired me with her printables as I incorporated my designs and ideas together.

This Insta Worm Science Experiment we bought as a kit from Steve Spangler was a HUGE hit. The kids were super impressed with this experiment.

Hint: Make sure you put the food coloring in the quirt bottle and not in the cup.

Insta-Worms are made because of polymers specifically sodium alginate which is a long chain of molecules called a polymer. This linking together of hundreds of sugar molecules is used to thicken foods such as ice cream, pie, or gummy worms.

Finally, for the sweetest science project, each guest can mix food coloring into a bowl of frosting, creating his own magic goop for cupcake decorating. The project may turn into a contest to see who could create the ugliest color. Of course, all the boys end up with dark brown.

  • Molecular Fruit: Use a melon baller to scoop fruit such as watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew into balls. Attach them together with toothpicks so that they look like molecule chains. You can also use grapes and blueberries.
  • Elemental Sandwiches: Cut grilled cheese, or turkey and cheese sandwiches into fourths. On each sandwich square, write an element’s periodic table abbreviation with Kraft Easy Cheese.
  • Pizza Science: Cooking is a science too! Allow the children to create their own pizza by providing them an assortment of toppings and small pizza dough. In addition to common pizza toppings, you can provide some more interesting choices such as shredded cheese, pineapple, grilled chicken, Alfredo sauce and hot dog slices.
  • Beaker Soda: Serve fizzy drinks in clean, new beakers. Green soda like Mountain Dew or lemon lime fruit juice would look perfect with a gummy worm draped over the side of the beaker!
  • Test Tube Jell-O: Prepare green or blue Jell-O according to the package and serve in test tubes.

Its an excellent idea to kick-off your science birthday party plan by designing creative birthday party invitations. You can get your kid involved, too!

Print out an HD image of the periodic table, and on the back of the picture, pen the invite in cursive writing. You could include a mysterious code and offer a prize to whoever solves it!

Buy touchable bubbles and attach the invitation card to it. These touchable bubbles do not pop and are generally available in a neon test tube.

Alternatively, cut a piece of construction paper in the shape of a flask. Use blue or green glitter to cover the surface. Attach the flask to a paper bottom with glue and add the party details on the body of the flask

Americans In The Middle

Weird Science Party for kids

Developing a sense of enthusiasm and awareness of math concepts is the best way parents and teachers can help children. The change from traditional, fact-based math to more strategy-based math is beginning to be reflected in American classrooms, but it cant happen fast enough.

The Department of Educations THIRD INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE STUDY, which surveyed more than a half-million students in 41 countries, found the United States smack in the middle regarding math achievement. It characterized U.S. math education as a mile wide and an inch deep. Those countries where students outperformed the U.S., such as Japan, Singapore, Korea, Hungary and the Czech Republic, use a more conceptual model of math instruction which allows students to develop math strategies rather than using memorization and drills. The students also work in small groups that require them to communicate their thinking to others.

In the best schools, children are not only expected to learn the time tables, but theyre also expected to understand them as well. As in Japan, the theory is that if you dont know the concept, you wont advance very far by memorization alone. Mokros notes that children who learn the concept as a prelude to the fact tend to give up speed, at least in the beginning. So parents might have to be willing to wait until the fourth grade for children to memorize the kind of math facts they used to know in the third.
