Taste And Texture: Cake
Ive heard of these people that use cake simply as a vehicle for frosting. Somehow, these individuals walk the earth without appreciation for a perfectly textured slice of spongy cake. I, however, am not one of those people. I. Love. Cake.
And although I picked this dessert up in Toronto, its my understanding that all Milk Bar products are actually flown in from NYC. So obviously, time and distance factor in the quality of consumed product. Having heard so much hype about this cake, I had very high expectations. And knowing the deliciousness of other Milk Bar desserts, the bar raised even higher. However, when the time came to bite into the slice of presumed heaven, l have to admit I was disappointed.
Now, this is not to say that the cake was so dry that an avalanche of crumbs tumbled to my plate. But the moist, freshness that give cakes that ever-so-desirable quality was seriously lacking. However Im, chalking this up to sheer travel distance . I mean, after a long road trip, people arent exactly at peak quality either.
Cake texture earned a respectable 3.5 out of from me this round.
How To Store Homemade Brown Butter Birthday Cake Ice Cream
Store brown butter birthday cake ice cream in the freezer fully covered for 2-3 months. I like to separate mine into two large glass Tupperware containers with a lid so that I dont keep opening the same box when eating out of it.
If Im being honest, I dont think these pictures do the ice cream justice, lol. It was really hard to capture the swirls of brown butter underneath the birthday cake crumbles but I promise, this ice cream is amazing. Not being able to travel during the pandemic meant not being able to get my annual Milk Bar fix. But, thanks to their new Milk Bar Ice Cream pints, I could finally get their ice cream at home. So, how does it compare to their in-store soft serve? Lets discuss.
Since 2017, Ive been to Vegas at least once per year well, at least through 2019. And one constant of my visits is getting a cup of Cereal Milk soft serve with hot fudge from Milk Bar Las Vegas at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. I cant explain it, for some reason their savory-sweet soft serve matches incredibly well with their dark, rich, chewy hot fudge. So, when they announced that theyd be selling pints, I got excited.

Lets slow clap for America. Were screwing up a lot around here these days, but one area where Americans are consistently winning is birthdays. In my lifetime, Ive been apart of very few birthday celebrations that didnt include cake and Im thinking thats something I need to appreciate about my motherland today. An extra special shout out goes to those who celebrate with the quintessential American cake flavor- the one, the only, confetti cake. Is Milk Bar Worth It
The Milk Bar Birthday Cake is as fun to look at as it is to eat.
My family and I thoroughly loved this midweek celebratory treat. It felt a little odd to slice into such a festive dessert without first singing an off-key chorus of happy birthday, but after one heaping forkful of sprinkle-speckled cake and frosting, we quickly got over it. The only hiccup was the small piece of plastic I found in my slice, which looked like it came from the jagged edge of the plastic wrap that encircled the cake. It was a small thing and didnt take away from how delightful the entire experience was.

Two: Make The Milk Bar Funfetti Cake
Okay, step one done! Lets make the cake. Start by mixing together the dry ingredients. And then in a second bowl, you want to cream your butter, shortening and sugars until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Then add the eggs one at a time. You want to then add the oil, buttermilk, and vanilla and mix again to medium high and beat again for 4-6 minutes. The mixture will be light in color and liquidy.
Dont forget to add those sprinkles!
Then spread the batter into your prepared sheet pan and bake. Once the cake springs back, or a cake tester comes out clean its done. Allow to cool. You can make the cake ahead of time, up to 5 days. Just allow to cool and then wrap and store in the refrigerator.

What Do I Need To Make This Milk Bar Cake
Ok yes heres the thing you will need a few things to make this cake that you may not have on hand. Ill be perfectly honest its got some unique tools and ingredients but its all worth it.
- 6-inch cake rings You will use these to cut the cake rounds out and then to stack the cake. You might be able to try baking this in a 6-inch cake or 8-inch cake round but you would need to adjust the baking time.
- Jelly roll pan You need to use a specific sized jelly roll pan so the batter fits. You need a 10×15 jelly roll pan.
- Acetate Cake Collar This is used to wrap around the cake rings to create that look that is the Milk Bar cake.
If you dont want to get all these things but want to experience the wonder that is the Milk Bar cake you could try baking in a 6-inch cake pan and then frost without the cake collar. I havent tried this method, but I think it would work. It wont have the same look but no one will care once they take a bite.

Milk Bar bakes all its goodies in a commissary kitchen, and it delivers seven days a week, so you can get the box in time for your special occasion no matter the day. Flat-rate shipping is $15, but is waived on orders over $100, and packages ship via FedEx, OnTrac, AxelHire, CDL, and BOND. All of my treats arrived perfectly intact and well-chilled, thanks to ice packs.
To best see how the treats held up in transit, I opted for the confection that seemed most high riskthe classic 6-inch birthday cake, plus a box of a dozen birthday cake truffles.
The cake arrived on exactly the day I chose, in the late morning. I opened the insulated bag that came inside the exterior cardboard box to find, first, a sample of the latest MIlk Bar product: a two-pack of chocolate birthday truffle crumb cakes. Under that, there was the box of cake truffles and the cake. All of the items arrived cool and perfectly intact.

These Momofukus Milk Bar Birthday Cupcakes have all the taste of the Momofukus Milk Bar Birthday Cake, but without all the additional work of building a layer cake.
Do you have an item that makes you smile just when you look at it? Sprinkles kind of do that for me. They remind me of being a carefree kid eating something special. Maybe thats it, they create specialness.
Thats something I always love to portray in food using a special item, making your guests feel special with out too much fluff. It creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This Birthday Cupcake recipe made a lot of people smile, it was great.
I also found that the package of sprinkles, a small plastic container in our case, was an amazing toy for my toddler girls. Kept them occupied for a solid 20 minutes. One of them wanted to eat these cupcakes like crazy, but theyre not full-blown on the sugar train yet.
I can relate to her though, seeing pretty sprinkles sitting on top of a mound of icing is an image we can all get excited about.
