Weve done a bit of an office poll and enjoyed reliving our fave childhood party games. Heres our list of retro birthday party games for kids that are easily pulled together without much planning, and are sure to entertain those little party animals.

The Chocolate Eating Game

This game is great for kids from six years old upwards. You will need a large bar of chocolate, a knife and fork, a scarf, hat and gloves. Oversized hats and gloves work super well for extra laughs.

Get the children to sit around a plate with the large bar of chocolate on it. Each child takes their turn to roll a die until someone rolls a six.

The child who rolls a six then has to put on the hat, scarf and gloves and start to cut and eat the chocolate using the knife and fork.

The other children continue rolling the die until another six is rolled. At that point, the child-eating the chocolate must stop eating.

Now its the turn of the new six roller to don the hat, scarf and gloves and start eating.

The game ends when the whole bar of chocolate has been eaten. And thats when the real fun starts for the party host as the sugar rush hits!!!!!

Guess My Name / Catchphrase

40 Kids Birthday Party Activities and Games for all ages

This is a great party game where you guess a word or phrase using clues provided by a member of your team. You can buy the game, or DIY it.

To make your own version, come up with names, phrases, or objects that are relevant to the birthday celebrant. This can be people in the room, or favorite movie or book characters, or anything related to their hobbies or sports.

Write these on paper scraps and place into a bowl, then split everyone into two teams. One person from the team names off things that represent the pulled word until the rest of their team guesses it.

Allow 2 minutes per team and see how many they can guess. Whoever guesses the most wins!

    1. Saran Wrap Game

This one requires a little prep: You’ll need a box of plastic wrap and a bag of candy, or an assortment of small, durable goodies. Pick one item to place at the center of your saran wrap ball. Wrap it thoroughly in plastic wrap, then add more items as your wrapped ball gets bigger, trapping them in layers of wrap. Once you’ve used a whole roll of wrap , you’re ready to play.

Gather in a circle or around a table. Give one person the wrapped bundle give the person next to them a pair of dice. The person with the saran wrap bundle must unravel as much of the ball as possible before the person with the dice rolls doubles. Once the person with the dice rolls doubles, they pass the dice down and receive the bundle. Repeat until the ball is completely unwound.

For alternative versions, have the person with the plastic wrap ball wear oven mitts, or set a timer for each turn instead of using dice.

    2. Post It Note Game

You’ll need a stack of sticky notes and a pen. Write a name of a well-known public figure or character on each note, then pass them around until everyone has one. Without looking, each person should stick their note on their forehead or back. Have everyone mingle, or sit in a circle and take turns asking yes or no questions to discover your assigned identity. Play until everyone has correctly guessed their identity, or pass out prizes to those who guess correctly.

Don’t Say Yes Or No Game

The Don’t Say Yes or No game is one of the funniest question games to play with friends, where you ask a party member a long series of questions that would normally require them to answer ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, the catch being that the person is not allowed to say those words. You are also not allowed to nod or shake your head. You can ask the person “Do you like dogs?”, “Do you have a boyfriend?” “Are you a pilot?” “Do you have brothers or sisters?”. Their natural instinct would be to answer no or yes, but instead they should come up with something more interesting. It’s great fun and heaps of laughs for all participants.

    Creative Childrens Birthday Party Games

    Posted by Sara Kendall

Gearing up for your childs birthday party isnt complete without planning a few games. They are a great way to get the little ones to interact, while providing lots of entertainment. Here are some creative ideas to get you started.

  • Bubble Wrap Hopscotch: Pull out your saved Bubble Wrap to create a hopscotch board. Kids love popping those bubbles. Cut Bubble Wrap into 10 squares. Use a marker and white paper to create numbers from 1 to 10. Place the numbers under the squares and tape to secure. Let the kids get to hopping.
  • Air Balloon: Kids of all ages love balloons. Blow up a balloon for each child. Instruct them to keep it bouncing in the air. Challenge them to see who can keep it afloat the longest without hitting the ground. For more fun, add multiple balloons.
  • Animal Moves: Gallop like a horse, run like a tiger and hop like a kangaroo. Call out an animal name and everyone mimics its well-known action. Let kids take turns calling out animal names. Who knows what theyll come up with! Kids love acting out their favorite animals. Genius idea: Cutting a foam noodle into pieces to use as a prop will help create bumblebee stingers and unicorn horns.
  • Blind Makeover: Pair kids up and give them a few cosmetics such as blush, powder and lipstick. Blindfold one player and have the blindfolded person apply makeup to the others face. Switch roles, so everyone gets a makeover. Make sure to have baby wipes or make-up removal wipes on hand.
