Last week, I hit publish on the Best First Birthday Ideas for Your Little Boy and today we are talking about all the best ideas for your sweet little girls first birthday. I am so excited I can hardly contain myself! As a mom to both a girl and a boy, I loved getting to experience planning for each babys first birthday. And now, as a professional photographer I get to see so many fun first birthday themes and so many creative ideas. And today I am sharing them all with you. Even though I mostly photograph weddings these days and no longer do newborn photography, I really have the best time photographing first birthday parties. There are so many cute little details. Birthday is the time to celebrate the first year of your childs life. There are many child photographers, whose main focus is on kids photography. And, they take wonderful pictures for all types of occasions like birthday party photoshoots. Though it may be a hectic task to plan a birthday party, taking photos should not be difficult. Therefore, for a huge party celebration, have a photoshoot of your own. Here are some best first birthday photoshoot ideas that will surely be loved by parents, family members, and friends.

Choosing A Location Or Backdrop
Depending on where you live and what the weather is like, you have a few options here.
Outdoor pictures are my first choice, hands down. Even if you dont have a park or special location nearby, your backyard will usually do the trick. This picture was taken in the subjects backyard. Practically no editing was needed in this picture.
Based on the weather or the time of year, you may have to move the photo shoot inside. Luckily, there are a ton of indoor options for first birthday pictures. Two of my children were born in the winter, so we did their pictures in our home.
You have two options when it comes to indoor pictures. First, you can use any existing location in your home. Is there a cute spot in your childs nursery? Do you have a bright play room that would look cute?
Another easy and affordable option is to set up an in-home studio. With little effort, you can create a professional looking set up for a baby or family portrait.
What you need:
Backdrops are sheets of material that you would hang behind the subject as a background. There are plenty of beautiful options to pick from, and it is really fun to pick out what you want. Take a look at some of these options and read the reviews:

Birthday Shoot With Props

Every child has a favorite toy, so you can get your child something to play with during the photoshoot. A prop can come in handy to keep your child distracted and occupied, enabling you to get the best photographs of your child on this special day. Props help calm a child down and make them feel at ease. This is what you want to show in your photos. You dont want pictures of your child looking scared or uneasy.
Covid Cant Take Away Our Photos
Does anyone else feel like the current COVID-19 situation has thrown a wrench in to your plans for the celebrations in your life? Its been hard to navigate the passing of so many milestones graduations, anniversaries, weddings , and birthdays. Although we couldnt have a big party for Claire-Bear, I still wanted to capture her on her first birthday, to really commemorate the passing of a big milestone. Since having a photographer come in to my home was not an option at the time, I tried to do my best to create a birthday photoshoot that felt professional, and allowed me to capture photos of this season Ill cherish forever.

We have prepared a list of the first birthday photo shoot ideas that will help you capture the sweetest moments. One year photos, like a time machine, will bring you to the times when your children were little and so cute.
The Beauty Of All Flowers
Capture all moments with some flowers to make a beautiful and perfect picture. Sometimes nature is the best prop we can get. Get the flower near your cute baby. You can put it directly on the floor, use a basket, or even both. Using flowers will create a warm atmosphere and a lovely feeling when you see the photos.

Get Happy With Balloons
On birthdays, you cannot miss photoshoots with colorful balloons. Not only for decoration or to create a festive atmosphere, your little one can have fun playing with air balloons or helium filled balloons. Use balloons that match the theme of your baby photoshoot. You can choose one color for all the balloons or make them colorful.

For the babys safety, keep an eye on all the balloons so your baby is safe from any potential popped balloons. Make sure to use a number 1 balloon to show that your baby is on her first birthday. You can get these balloons in various places of birthday supplies.
Our First Birthday Pictures For Baby Boy:
My son’s birthday is during the summer, so we had to take photos inside, otherwise the bugs would’ve been all over his cake smash and our family pictures would’ve been a sweaty mess!
Again, I just used some bedroom decor . His name is Captain, so the theme kind just unfolded from there. We also had these little crowns randomly, so I popped one on him.
Because his first birthday photoshoot had a pirate theme , on our test run day, I dressed him in a Pirate costume. But for the cake smash, our daughter was home and I wanted some family photos so I dressed us all in nautical blues. Plus, his cotton onesie is easier to clean than the pirate costume.
With both my kids, what I found is that they are pretty polite eaters. So we didn’t get any crazy cake smash pictures.
My son definitely felt a little overwhelmed with the cake smash actually and needed big sister to show him how to do it:

Use Props That Are Safe For Your Baby
Make sure all props used in photos are safe for your babys age and size-no sharp edges or small parts that could get into tiny mouths! And if possible, make sure that any props used are non-toxic . This will help prevent choking hazards and other safety issues like burns from hot lights or candles used for lighting purposes .
Balloons Or Hot Air Balloon
You could go the hot air balloon for more of a Pixar movie Up vibe or, you can just use bunches of balloons. Either way, this theme is festive and colorful, and youre sure to get lots of smiles and bright eyes for photos. Balloons make for some photogenic props because they keep your baby distracted in the most adorable way.

Birthday Photoshoot With Balloons
The helium-filled balloons are an integral part of birthday party celebrations. If you cant do without balloons at your first birthday party, then why not take some truly unique and creative photographs with them? Hold your baby under a colorful balloon arch and click some amazing and stunning pictures. This can be done even at home to give a feel of both seasons, spring and autumn. For this shoot, you will need lots of balloons in different colors. You can change their color according to the season green for spring and orange for autumn. Hang them from above with a colorful backdrop cloth, and this will give a colorful effect. Try to make your baby stand under the balloons. This picture will be a great memory for all years to come.

First birthday photo sessions can be as styled or as simple as you like. If you want to add something special to celebrate this milestone for your little one, here are some ideas for my favorite props to add to your session:
SMASH CAKE
First birthday cake smashes are signature for this age. Coordinate with whatever bakery you are using to make an additional smash cake for your photoshoot. Of course you can DIY but be sure to bring some small pedestal to sit the cake on.
This is usually done at the end of the session so that we can clean up and change clothes.

BALLOONS
A simple balloon or small bunch of balloons can be a perfect prop or compliment to any first birthday photoshoot. I love grouping smaller balloons with a statement balloon like a single big round balloon, or a mylar number 1.
For an extra special touch, include a decorative string like ferns or leaves .
You can purchase a small helium tank from Target to blow these up on your own the day of the photoshoot or you can take them to any place that sells party balloons to have them inflated for you.

Planning A First Birthday Photography Session
First Birthday Photography Session: One Year
1. The Location.Deciding on if you would like to have the session indoors at my studio, or at an outdoor location would be the first step in planning a one year photography session. For an outdoor location, the best lighting is about an hour before sunset, so we would be looking at meeting about two hours before sunset for the start of our session. Depending on the time of year, this might be past your little ones bedtime, and might not be the happiest time of the day. In this case, I would suggest an indoor session or possibly a sunrise session.
2. Backgrounds/SetsTypically for this type of session we get through 2-3 different sets/backgrounds. I typically have two different sets ready to go when you arrive.
The first few shots we capture will be portraits of your baby dressed in a cute outfit for a couple traditional first birthday portraits.
If the baby is cooperative and happy, and time permits, Ill change the backdrop as you take a few minutes to change your baby into another outfit.
Then for the finale, well do the cake smash set where we typically do a smash. Then depending on how the session goes we finish with a baby-in-bubbles clean-up type of shot.
3. OutfitsKeep in mind that solid colors tend to photograph best. Try to avoid busy patterns and logos, as these can distract from the main subject.
From experience, shy away from colored frosting. Specifically red, brown, and dark colored frosting and chocolate cake .

Ive been avoiding this post. Primarily because Im absolutely devastated that my last baby is no longer a baby, and taking first birthday pictures memorializes that truth. I know, I know, shell always be my baby, but you get my drift.

Charlottes First Birthday Party
Finally, we have Charlottes gorgeous 1st birthday party which was really like 2 parties in one! Her parents also hired Angi & Co to plan and design two different dessert table designs- one floral and secret garden inspired and the other featuring more traditional Korean desserts and decor. This party was hosted in their Connecticut home. In addition to photographing the event, we also photographed a staged cake smash set up, beach family photos and mommy and me family photos all in different outfits and locations around the home and neighborhood. It was really like 5-6 different shoots in one! It was a lot of work and planning but the end result was beautiful!
Baby In Jelly Beans Shoot
This is a simple first birthday photoshoot idea. In this beautiful photoshoot, the baby is dressed up in a white color outfit and beautiful flowers are attached to the head of the child along with cute jewelry. The childs outfit should be kept as simple as possible for this birthday photoshoot because babies love to play with colorful candy beans that will bring a huge change in the entire look of the baby. You can also use a soft and fabric bean bag to place the child on it.
